Adams Fires Back at Cohen's New Year's Eve Diss with Stark Warning

Adams Fires Back at Cohen's New Year's Eve Diss with Stark Warning

Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams delivered a sharp rebuke to Andy Cohen following the Bravo personality’s criticism on CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live on Wednesday, December 31.

Cohen, 57, marked the conclusion of Adams’ time as mayor shortly after midnight on Thursday, January 1, coinciding with the inauguration of Zohran Mamdani as NYC’s 112th mayor.

Describing Adams’ mayoral term as “chaotic,” Cohen sarcastically remarked, “Wonderful, you received your pardons. Proceed into the sunset. We’ll manage what remains, what you’ve left behind.”

“Go celebrate,” Cohen continued. “We’ll see you at all the gatherings. You’ve enjoyed festivities throughout four years.”

Adams, 65, responded to Cohen via an X post later on Thursday, writing, “My reaction to @Andy: AA. Another careless, inebriated outburst.”

“If anyone genuinely cares about him, they should advise him to seek assistance,” he continued. “New Yorkers aren’t amused by him. They are worried about him. Public intoxication is an illness. He should get help.”

“He was secure in Times Square because we performed our duty. Once more,” Adams wrote, referencing Cohen hosting the annual CNN New Year’s Eve special live from Times Square.

“Seek help. AAA: Andy’s Alcoholics Anonymous,” he concluded.

Cohen has not publicly addressed Adams’ post. Us Weekly has contacted his representative for a statement.

In 2024, Adams, who served as NYC mayor from January 2022 to December 2025, confronted a federal investigation involving charges including bribery, fraud and soliciting illegal foreign campaign contributions. He entered a plea of not guilty. The charges against him were subsequently dismissed.

Cohen, meanwhile, hosted CNN’s famously spirited New Year’s Eve Live special with Anderson Cooper for the ninth year in a row.

The pair were joined by actor B.J. Novak shortly after midnight, when Cohen commented on Adams’ tenure as mayor, prompting Novak to playfully say, “Andy, Andy, we need to cut you off. I’ve witnessed this before.”

Novak was alluding to Cohen’s previous, memorable outburst about another former NYC mayor, Bill de Blasio, during CNN’s 2021-22 New Year’s Eve special. “[I’ve been] observing Mayor de Blasio conduct his ‘victory lap’ after four years in the most challenging job as the mayor of New York,” Cohen said at the time. “The only thing that the Democrats and the Republicans can concur on is what a disappointing mayor he has been, so farewell, loser!”

CNN defended Cohen at the time, issuing a statement that read, “Andy expressed something he shouldn’t have on live television. We’ve spoken with him about it and anticipate having him back next year.”

For his part, Cohen mentioned during a February 2022 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that he didn’t recall much of the incident.

Andy Cohen’s Remarks About Drinking During CNN’s ‘New Year’s Eve Live’

“[Anderson Cooper and I] were in the car after [the CNN special] and I noticed on Twitter the rant I delivered about de Blasio. And I don’t remember — though it was roughly 40 minutes earlier — saying, ‘Sayonara, sucker.’ to the departing mayor of New York,” Cohen explained.

He added, “I realize, ‘Oh, my goodness, I said, ‘Sayonara, sucker.’.’ And [Cooper] said, ‘Yes, you did!’”

Cohen stated he “had a wonderful time” hosting the show with Cooper, 58. “It is incredibly enjoyable getting intoxicated on CNN and simply ranting on a platform. There were endorphins that I was releasing. I thought, ‘This is enjoyable!’” he said.
