AJ Michalka Reflects On Joe Jonas Romance With Enduring Friendship And Fond Memories
AJ Michalka speaks with only warmth and positivity when discussing her past romance with former boyfriend Joe Jonas.
“Despite the fact that we were, of course, a couple, I believe a bond of friendship endures between us and always will,” the 34-year-old Aly & AJ vocalist revealed to People in an interview released on Wednesday, September 25. “Our relationship blossomed precisely as our musical careers were beginning to soar, which created a unique dynamic few others grasp. I find that quite special.”
Michalka went on to describe Jonas, father to Willa, 5, and Delphine, 3, with his former spouse Sophie Turner, saying, “He’s a parent these days. He puts in tremendous effort, yet he retains a fantastic sense of humor. Moreover, he is genuinely considerate. Witnessing that was truly invigorating.”
AJ, then 36, and Jonas were romantically involved for almost a year in 2006, after she and her sister Aly Michalka served as opening acts for the Jonas Brothers’ tour. After their separation, speculation arose that Aly & AJ’s popular song “Potential Breakup Song” was penned about the “Cake By the Ocean” vocalist. Nevertheless, the siblings refuted claims that the tune was “linked to any specific individual” during a 2020 conversation with Business Insider.

“Our thought process was simply, ‘Let’s compose a breakup track,’” AJ clarified back then. “We never imagined it would evolve into a breakup anthem, but that’s somewhat what happened, which is truly neat.”
Jonas, whose influence is confirmed in Aly & AJ’s 2007 song “Flattery” from their album Insomniatic, additionally playfully addressed the “Potential Breakup Song” speculations alongside Aly and AJ in a May TikTok video. The Michalka siblings and the boy band vocalist mimed the words to the well-known melody, simulating a phone conversation.
“You took too much time, you took too much time, you took too much time to return my call,” Jonas vocalized before the camera shifted to Aly and AJ. “And ordinarily I would simply overlook that / Were it not for the fact that it was my birthday.”
The trio of artists subsequently performed the track’s most memorable phrase: “My foolish birthday!”
In the accompanying text, Jonas penned, “Alright, but I would absolutely never do that on your birthday @Aly and AJ.”
The siblings retorted, “Despite everything, people STILL believe it concerns you.”
The three created the TikTok video backstage at Jonas’ performance at The Mint in Los Angeles, following his invitation via text to Aly and AJ to join him in singing their 2005 track “No One.”
“Our reaction was, ‘Absolutely, without a doubt.’ It was a truly magnificent occasion,” AJ, who has been in a committed relationship with actor Josh Pence since 2017, shared with People. “It was incredibly thoughtful. He was introduced to [Aly’s son] Jack, and we spent some time together backstage.”

She elaborated, “I believe the admirers were agreeably astonished, and so much time had passed that I think it was quite invigorating for many supporters to witness us reunited. Yet, he’s charming. It was an exceptionally enjoyable evening.”
Regarding the prospect of fans spotting Aly & AJ appearing as special performers on the Jonas Brothers’ Jonas20: Greetings From Your Hometown Tour, AJ hinted, “There’s certainly a chance. It merely depends on whether circumstances permit and if we can coordinate it with both of us on tour. It’s challenging, but, yes, ideally, that would be wonderful.”
Aly appended, “I believe it would be exceptionally entertaining.”
