Al Pacino Mourns Diane Keaton: "She Shaped the Trajectory of My Existence"

Al Pacino Mourns Diane Keaton:

Al Pacino has finally spoken publicly after the passing of his former partner, Diane Keaton, who succumbed to pneumonia.

“I am profoundly grieved by Diane Keaton's death,” expressed the 85-year-old actor in a declaration released to Deadline on Thursday, October 16. “Upon receiving the initial news, I was profoundly affected. Diane was my companion, my confidante, a source of joy, and someone who, on numerous occasions, shaped the trajectory of my existence. Despite more than three decades having elapsed since our time together, the recollections persist with clarity, and her departure has brought them back with an intensity that is both sorrowful and touching.”

His statement further elaborated, “She embraced life limitlessly, and her distinct vitality infused everything she encountered. She pioneered opportunities for others, motivated countless individuals, and possessed a rare, extraordinary talent that shone brightly in her professional and personal spheres. Her presence on screen was captivating — a blend of brilliance and allure, tempestuous spirit and gentle warmth. She was truly remarkable. While acting was her chosen craft, it represented merely a fraction of the avenues through which she channeled her ingenuity and artistic vision.”

“People will mourn her absence, yet more significantly, they will cherish her memory. She imprinted an indelible legacy. She was indefatigable, tenacious, and, most importantly, profoundly empathetic,” Pacino concluded. “I will forever hold her in my thoughts. She possessed an ethereal quality — and in my innermost being, she perpetually will.”

A Look Back at Diane Keaton's Iconic Performances: 'The Godfather' and Beyond

The publication People first reported on Saturday, October 11, that Keaton had passed away at 79 years old. Her family subsequently verified to the same source that pneumonia was the official cause of death, as noted on her death certificate. Her remains were cremated.

Keaton famously portrayed Kay Adams in The Godfather cinematic saga, sharing the screen with Pacino, who played Michael Corleone. The esteemed late actors Marlon Brando and James Caan were also part of the cast. Pacino and Keaton commenced a romantic involvement in the 1970s, soon after the inaugural film's release, a connection that endured intermittently until 1990.

Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola collaborated on the 1972 movie's script with novelist Mario Puzo, who published the identically titled book in 1969.

Coppola, 86, had previously elaborated on his choice to cast Keaton — then a comparatively obscure actress — in the prominent female role of the film. During an Instagram Q&A session in 2023, Keaton herself posed the question, “For what reason did you ever select me for The Godfather?!!” (The Godfather also marked one of Pacino's initial significant screen appearances.)

Diane Keaton's Most Iconic Roles: From 'The Godfather' to More

Coppola then publicly shared Keaton's inquiry, providing an endearing response for all to read.

“I selected you because, despite your role being the more conventional/subdued spouse, you possessed an additional quality — something profound, humorous, and immensely captivating. (My intuition proved correct),” he disclosed at that moment.

The renowned director additionally disclosed that his initial encounter with Keaton's acting talent occurred during her tenure in the debut Broadway production of Hair in 1968.

“I received an invitation from Fred Astaire to accompany him to a performance of Hair,” Coppola further elaborated. “A production which he found utterly perplexing. You were among the cast, and I recall your exquisite vocal performance.”

Regarding her role in The Godfather, Keaton entered the process without prior knowledge. Many years following the film's premiere — which has since achieved widespread acclaim as one of cinema's greatest works — the actress confessed that she had not read the source novel until securing the part of Kay.

“I believe the most generous act ever extended to me … was being cast in The Godfather without having even read the book. I was completely uninformed,” she shared with People in August 2022. “I was simply attending auditions, needing employment,” she appended. “Consequently, I was present, and he requested my return, then cast me, and subsequently, Al Pacino.”

Keaton observed that reflecting on her professional journey, particularly concerning The Godfather, evoked a specific sentiment within her.

“My thoughts turn to how fortunate I am. That is my prevailing sentiment. And my perspective on such matters is, for instance, auditioning for The Godfather without ever having perused the novel or holding any particular interest in it, as my sole objective was to audition. I required a job,” she further stated. “Thus, I was there, and he requested my callback, subsequently casting me, and then Al Pacino.”

Legend has it that the film studio initially resisted casting Pacino in the role of Michael. However, when Coppola arranged a screen test to assess the dynamic between Keaton and Pacino, the situation shifted dramatically.

“He introduced Al Pacino, and we performed the scene together; for some inexplicable reason, that facilitated their decision to cast him. Can you fathom if they had chosen not to?” Keaton recounted to People. “Therefore, many of these life occurrences arrive as complete revelations; much like today, this was an astonishment. This is an absolute, utter surprise to me.”
