Amy Poehler Dares Not Invite Martha Stewart on Her Podcast Due to SNL History

Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast has attracted a notable lineup of high-profile celebrity guests — but Martha Stewart probably won’t be appearing anytime soon.

Poehler, 54, playfully admitted while chatting with fellow Saturday Night Live alum Ana Gasteyer on the Tuesday, December 23, episode that she’s hesitant to interview Stewart, 84, because of years of SNL sketches that satirized Stewart’s mannerisms.

“Martha, I’m not going to invite you onto the show because I’m a little nervous, but please listen and know that you’re quite something,” Poehler quipped as she and Gasteyer, 58, considered how to perfectly mimic a Stewart impersonation.

While both Poehler and Gasteyer revealed they are both “fascinated” with the culinary icon, the pair, who were SNL castmates in the early 2000s, noted that a nearly still mouth is essential when imitating Stewart’s on-camera presence.

“When we’re doing Martha, what are we doing with her lips? And how do we speak?” Poehler asked Gasteyer, who explained that Stewart is “very conscious of how the camera will look on her.”

Poehler joked, “It’s a practically motionless mouth. … We’re going to prepare a Christmas meal, and almost nothing will move.”

The duo’s amusing discussion wasn’t the first mention of Stewart on “Good Hang”; she, who hosted Martha Stewart Living in the late 1990s before The Martha Stewart Show premiered in 2005 and continued until 2012, has been a recurring topic.

During the July 15 episode, Poehler and comedian Cole Escola discussed his deep admiration for Stewart, which led to more jokes from the pair.

“I want to serve chilled mashed potatoes to a dying Martha Stewart,” Escola, 39, remarked. “That’s my ideal dinner party. Her final bite. I would get to say, you know, I served Martha her last bite.”

Poehler then quipped that Stewart’s response would likely be something like, “Mmm, cold.”

Stewart addressed how others portray her during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Fallon, 51, brought up the topic, pointing out that Stewart had been portrayed “nine times” on SNL by former and current cast members, including Poehler, Gasteyer, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Rachel Dratch and guest hosts Janeane Garofalo and David Spade.

“He’s my favorite,” Stewart said, gesturing to a photo of Spade, 61, while in character on SNL. “He was wearing my actual poncho. The real poncho.”

She also confirmed that she enjoys seeing impressions of herself, telling Fallon, “I love it. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. You might as well be imitated.”

Fallon also inquired whether Stewart would ever consider being a guest host on the live NBC program, to which she playfully responded that she had once offered herself for the role despite challenging scheduling conflicts. “I wanted to and they asked me as I was leaving Alderson, that facility I was in for a while, and my parole officer wouldn’t permit it,” Stewart told Fallon, who laughed along with his audience. “I was only allowed to be out of my house eight hours a day. That parole officer. I’m so annoyed. Perhaps someday. I would be wonderful.”

Stewart’s Alderson reference referred to her five-month stay at Alderson’s Federal Prison Camp, which lasted from October 2004 to March 2005. She was incarcerated on charges including conspiracy and obstruction of justice related to an insider trading scandal.
