Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer call it quits after seven years of marriage

Following years of playfully discussing her single status and dating experiences, Amy Schumer developed a connection with Chris Fischer in 2017.

Us Weekly initially reported in November of that year that Schumer was dating Fischer, a renowned chef. They became engaged just months after they began seeing each other.

“The manner in which my now-husband proposed was quite unusual,” Schumer humorously shared during her Saturday Night Live monologue in May 2018. “It was a rather unconventional proposal. It happened in the morning while I was still asleep. He tossed the box at me and said, 'I got you this.' But that’s a realistic proposal.”

After a brief engagement, Schumer and Fischer exchanged vows in an intimate ceremony in Malibu in February 2018. The actress and Fischer expanded their family in May 2019, welcoming son Gene after a challenging pregnancy. (Schumer struggled with hyperemesis gravidarum.)

Amy Schumer's Reflections on Her Marriage to Chris Fischer Through the Years

Prior to Gene’s birth, Fischer received a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. Schumer has been open about the potential implications of this diagnosis for Gene.

“The statistics are quite compelling regarding the likelihood that he will probably have autism,” Schumer mentioned on the “Dear Chelsea” podcast in March 2022. “Parents navigate different paths with this. Raising a child with severe autism is undeniably difficult. However, if Gene does happen to have ASD, I’m not actively seeking signs or hoping for a particular outcome. I simply want my children to be healthy and happy.”

In December of 2025, Schumer confirmed that she and Fischer had decided to separate after seven years together. The following month, the comedian initiated divorce proceedings.

February 2018

Schumer and Fischer married at a beachfront residence in Malibu, California, with notable guests including Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Aniston, Larry David, David Spade and Judd Apatow in attendance.

“It was a very relaxed wedding. It was arranged rather quickly,” a source told Us. “Many of the guests learned about the wedding happening on Tuesday from a text message Amy sent out on Sunday. It was like, 'Hey, this is happening. If you can make it, great. If not, no worries.' People came and went throughout the night. It was a beautiful day. Everyone was enjoying themselves.”

Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer’s Sweetest Family Moments

March 2019

Fischer was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and Schumer has consistently been his biggest supporter.

“It’s been beneficial for our family to have [Chris] diagnosed. I understand his behavior much better, and it has provided him with numerous tools,” Schumer later said on SNL in November 2022. “Even though the pandemic was so stressful, [I told him] this time spent with you and our son have been the best years of my life.”

May 2019

Several months after Schumer and Fischer’s wedding, they announced that she was expecting. Son Gene was born on May 5.

While they initially planned for Gene’s middle name to be Attell after friend David Attell, they changed it in late 2020 after people noticed it sounded like a certain word. Gene’s middle name is now David.

June 2020

Fischer taught Schumer essential cooking skills during the coronavirus pandemic for their Max docuseries, Amy Schumer Learns to Cook.

“I didn’t really realize that I could prepare anything,” she remarked in the June finale. “It was a journey. It was really enjoyable and quite rewarding. I feel like I received the greatest gift ever by learning from you. It all feels achievable [and] I’m truly proud that I know how to make things now.”

February 2024

Although the couple prefers to keep their relationship private, they occasionally appear together on red carpets. Fischer couldn’t help but express his admiration for his wife at the season 2 premiere of her Life & Beth series ahead of their wedding anniversary.

December 2025

After posting a photo without her wedding ring, Schumer addressed speculation regarding her and Fischer’s marital status.

“I rarely ever wear” jewelry, she wrote via Instagram in December 2025, adding, “Whatever ultimately happens with Chris has nothing to do with weight loss or autism. I’m hoping we can make it through, he’s the best.”

Then on December 12, Schumer confirmed that she and Fischer had decided to go their separate ways.

“Unfortunately, Chris and I have made the difficult decision to end our marriage after 7 years,” she announced via Instagram. “We love each other very much and will continue to prioritize raising our son. We would appreciate people respecting our privacy during this time.”

Alongside the announcement, Schumer posted a picture of her and Fischer riding the New York City subway together. She stated in her caption that she did not separate from Fischer because “I lost some pounds.” She described Fischer as a “talented” James Beard “award winning chef who can still attract attention. Amicable and all love and respect! Family forever.”

January 2026

Schumer officially filed for divorce from Fischer, according to documents obtained by Us.
