Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer End Seven-Year Marriage with Mutual Respect

Although Amy Schumer and Chris Fischer announced their decision to end their marriage on December 12, 2025, the couple consistently expressed affection for each other throughout their romantic relationship.

“Basically, Chris and I have made the challenging choice to dissolve our marriage after seven years,” Schumer captioned a nostalgic image of the pair on a New York City Subway train. “We deeply care for each other and will continue to prioritize raising our son. We would appreciate it if people respected our privacy during this time.”

This news followed weeks of speculation regarding the status of their relationship, beginning in November when the Daily Mail suggested the two were navigating a “difficult period.”

In January 2026, reports surfaced that Schumer had filed for divorce from Fischer.

She Didn’t Anticipate Loving Someone As Much As Her Son

“I didn’t realize I could feel such intense love — no offense to my spouse,” she told Entertainment Tonight in November 2019 after becoming a mother. (The pair share son Gene, who they welcomed in May 2019.)

“I believe we’re both surprised by the depth of love that’s possible,” she added.

They Are Dedicated to Co-Parenting

“Basically, Chris and I have made the challenging choice to dissolve our marriage after seven years,” she captioned a nostalgic image of the pair on a New York City Subway train via Instagram on December 12, 2025. “We deeply care for each other and will continue to focus on raising our son. We would appreciate it if people respected our privacy during this time.”

Schumer continued, “Friendly and with all the love and respect! Family forever.”

Chris Fischer Was “The Best Partner Ever”

During a 2022 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Schumer lauded Fischer as “the best partner ever,” noting that his autism diagnosis felt like “receiving a superpower.”

“People often lack understanding about autism,” she said. “They’re like, ‘Oh, does he enjoy counting? Should we scatter a pile of straws on the floor and will he count them?’”

His Mind Is “Distinct”

Fischer disclosed Schumer’s autism diagnosis during her 2019 comedy special Growing.

“I recognized from the start that my husband’s mind operated a little differently than mine. My husband was previously diagnosed with what was then called Asperger’s. He has autism spectrum disorder. He’s on the spectrum,” she said. “And once he received his diagnosis, it struck me as quite amusing, because all of the traits that indicated he was on the spectrum were also the reasons I fell deeply in love with him.”

His Proposal Was “Unremarkable”

While delivering her Saturday Night Live monologue in May 2018, Schumer described Fischer’s 2017 proposal as “unremarkable.”

“The way my now-husband proposed was rather ordinary,” Schumer joked at the time. “It happened in the morning while I was asleep. He tossed the box at me and said, ‘I got you this.’ But that’s a realistic proposal.”

Fischer Was Her “Favorite Person”

Schumer also frequently expressed positive sentiments about Fischer throughout their marriage.

“My husband is my absolute favorite person I’ve ever met,” Schumer wrote via Instagram in August 2019. “He’s kind, hilarious, interesting, and talented, and I admire him. Should I not hope my son doesn’t resemble him?”
