Amy Schumer Finds Strength in Faith and Family Amidst Separation
Amy Schumer is sharing her thoughts on her religious beliefs and how her family copes with difficult times.
“I truly cherish Hanukkah. I’ve consistently felt a great deal of excitement for it. Each time we illuminate the candles, it feels as though we have triumphed,” Schumer, 44, stated in an Instagram video posted by Noa Tishby on Sunday, December 21, the last day of Hanukkah. “Taking pride in being Jewish is the most effective response to antisemitism. It’s during the most challenging moments that my family is at its most humorous.”
She went on to say, “It’s often when we reach our lowest point that we are able to laugh the most. And I believe this isn't exclusive to my experience.”
These remarks follow a recent announcement, two weeks prior, that Schumer is separating from her husband, Chris Fischer, following rumors of a pending split.
Inside Amy Schumer’s ‘Cordial’ Separation From Husband Chris Fischer and Their ‘Objective’ for Co-parenting Son Gene
“Simply put, Chris and I have decided to end our marriage after seven years,” Schumer wrote on Instagram at the time. “We care for each other deeply and will continue to prioritize raising our son. We ask that our privacy be respected during this time.”
She also clarified that the separation isn't due to “weight loss” or because Fischer is a “talented” James Beard “award-winning chef who still attracts attention.”
“It’s a respectful parting, filled with love and understanding!” she added. “We will always be family.”
Schumer and Fischer started dating in November 2017 and became engaged shortly after. “The manner in which my now-husband proposed was rather underwhelming,” Schumer quipped during her Saturday Night Live appearance in May 2018. “It was a casual proposal. I was asleep. He simply tossed the ring box at me and said, ‘I got this for you.’ But that’s a realistic proposal.”
The couple married in February 2018 and welcomed their son Gene in May 2019 — around the time she revealed Fischer’s diagnosis of autism.
“I always recognized that my husband’s mind functioned differently from mine,” Schumer explained in her 2019 Netflix special, Growing. “After his diagnosis, it became clear how amusing it was, because all the traits that showed he was on the spectrum were also the qualities that made me fall deeply in love with him.”
She subsequently responded to concerns from fans about the possibility of her son also being diagnosed with autism.
“My husband is the most wonderful person I’ve ever known,” Schumer posted on Instagram in August 2019. “He is kind, funny, interesting, and gifted, and I greatly admire him. Should I hope my son isn’t like him?”
She continued, “I would be disappointed if he enjoyed The Big Bang Theory and NASCAR, not if he has ASD.”
Amy Schumer Discusses Speculation About Marriage to Chris Fischer: ‘Hoping We Can Get Through This’
Schumer publicly acknowledged Fischer’s support just before announcing their split, praising his unwavering care during her struggle with endometriosis, a condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus.
“I recently came across this old video and found it beautiful. It captures my authentic self. Chris discovered it,” Schumer, 44, wrote in an Instagram caption on December 12, accompanying a video from her 2021 endometriosis surgery. “I’ve faced many challenges with endometriosis. Encourage someone you care about to seek help for severe and painful periods. @endofound please consider donating with me today.”
