Amy Schumer playfully ponders her New Year's Eve kiss amid separation news
Amy Schumer is playfully addressing her single status as she prepares to celebrate the new year.
“Who will be sharing a kiss with me at midnight?” Schumer, 44, posted on her Instagram Stories on Wednesday, December 31, accompanied by a humorous selfie.
Schumer revealed earlier this month that she and her husband, Chris Fischer, have decided to separate after seven years together.
“Basically, Chris and I have made the tough decision to end our marriage after seven years,” the comedian wrote in an Instagram statement that has since been removed on December 12. “We still care for each other deeply and will continue to prioritize raising our son. We would appreciate everyone respecting our privacy during this time.”
A Look Inside Amy Schumer's Separation From Husband Chris Fischer: What Contributed to the Split?
Schumer, who shares a 5-year-old son, Gene, with Fischer, also refuted speculation that the breakup was linked to her recent weight loss.
“Basically, this is not because I lost some weight and thought I could find someone new,” she continued. “And it’s not because he’s a talented James Beard Award-winning chef who could still attract other partners. All love and respect. Family forever.”
While neither Schumer nor Fischer, 45, have provided further details about the reasons behind their separation, a source exclusively told Us Weekly that the pair maintain mutual respect.
“Amy still has affection for Chris, but not in a romantic way,” the insider told Us earlier this month. “He’s a wonderful person and an even better father.”
According to the source, Schumer and Fischer’s marriage simply “lost its vibrancy.”
“There wasn’t a dramatic, shocking event that caused their split,” the source added. “It gradually unfolded over time, and they agreed that their relationship was no longer what it used to be. [Their separation] has been planned for months as they worked out the logistics.”
The insider emphasized that Schumer and Fischer are focused on ensuring Gene’s daily life remains as stable as possible.
“Their priority is to make the transition as seamless as possible to minimize disruption to their son’s routine,” the insider told Us. “They both agree that Gene’s well-being and happiness are paramount.”
Amy Schumer's Reflections on Her Marriage to Chris Fischer: From 2018 to 2025
Schumer and Fischer began dating in 2017, marrying less than a year later. The former couple welcomed Gene in May 2019 shortly before the celebrity chef received an autism diagnosis. Schumer has been supportive of Fischer’s diagnosis and the possibility that Gene might also be on the spectrum.
“I think the chances are quite high that he will also have autism,” she said during a 2022 appearance on the “Dear Chelsea” podcast. “Raising a child with severe autism is incredibly challenging. But if Gene does have ASD, I’m not actively searching for signs in a way that’s distressing. I don’t have a preference either way.”
She concluded at the time, “You can observe certain signs, but the official diagnosis doesn’t come until later, and I can honestly say, I don’t have a preference either way. You simply want your children to be healthy and happy.”
