Andrew's Royal Exile: A Decade Tied to Epstein's Shadow

The decline of Prince Andrew's role within the monarchy is undeniably linked to his association with the deceased, notorious financier and convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.

Despite Andrew's consistent denials of misconduct, he faced accusations from Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre (born Roberts), who claimed he sexually assaulted her on three occasions during her seventeenth year. The pair reportedly met through Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell; the latter was found guilty of sex trafficking a minor subsequent to Epstein's death by suicide in 2019. (Maxwell continues to assert her innocence.)

Prince Andrew first withdrew from his official royal engagements when the Epstein scandal gained widespread attention in 2019, yet it was not until the allegations re-emerged in October 2025 that he officially renounced his royal designation.

"[I will] no longer utilize my designation or the honors bestowed upon me," he communicated to Us Weekly in a declaration. "As I have previously stated, I strongly refute the accusations leveled against me."

The Initial Meeting Between Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein

Andrew disclosed to Newsnight journalist Emily Maitlis in a shocking 2019 interview that he was introduced to Epstein in 1999, which contrasts with notes taken by the prince's private secretary in 2011, indicating that Andrew and the financier had met in "the early 1990s."

The two men were reportedly introduced by Maxwell, Prince Andrew's long-standing friend and Epstein's associate.

Jeffrey Epstein's Visit to Prince Andrew at Windsor Castle

Andrew confirmed to Newsnight that Epstein visited him at Windsor Castle and Sandringham in 2000, although he specified that the financier did not receive a formal invitation from the royal family.

"[It was] certainly at my behest, not at the Royal Family's behest, but remember that it was his girlfriend [Maxwell] who was the crucial factor in this," Andrew maintained. "He was, so to speak, a plus-one, to some extent in that regard."

That same year, Andrew and Epstein were both observed at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

Epstein's Legal Conviction

In 2008, Epstein admitted guilt to charges of child prostitution and soliciting a prostitute. As part of a plea agreement, he spent only 13 months incarcerated.

Prince Andrew informed Newsnight that he had "ceased communication" with Epstein throughout the investigation and trial, but re-established contact in 2010.

"It was one of those situations where someone is experiencing that sort of thing, 'Well, I'm terribly sorry, I can't be [seen with] you,'" he elaborated.

Prince Andrew's Trip to New York

Prince Andrew made a highly contentious decision to visit Epstein at his New York City residence in 2010, following the convicted sex offender's release from the Palm Beach County Jail. On Newsnight, the royal was questioned about why he had agreed to stay at Epstein's home given his conviction.

"I've interrogated myself as to why I went and what I was doing and if it was the correct course of action?" he stated. "Now, I went there with the singular intention of conveying to him that, due to his conviction, it was improper for us to be seen together."

The two were observed together days later when paparazzi captured them on a stroll in Central Park.

"We had an opportunity to take a walk in the park, and that was coincidentally the conversation that was photographed, which was when I told him, I said, 'Look, because of what has transpired, I don't believe it's appropriate that we should maintain contact,' and by mutual consent during that walk in the park, we resolved that we would go our separate ways, and I departed," Andrew recounted to Newsnight. "I believe it was the following day, and to this day, I have never had any communication with him from that point onward."

Andrew Steps Down From Key Position

The consequences of Andrew and Epstein's Central Park photograph were immediate, as Buckingham Palace announced in 2011 that Andrew would step down as a U.K. trade envoy.

Sexual Assault Allegation Against Andrew

As part of a victim's rights lawsuit against Epstein and Maxwell, Giuffre asserted that she was sexually abused by Andrew when she was 17 years old in 2001. Following an evening out at London's Tramp nightclub with Epstein, Maxwell, and Andrew, Giuffre claimed she was paid $15,000 by Maxwell and instructed to "do for [Prince Andrew] what you do for Epstein" at Maxwell's apartment.

"I have no recollection of ever encountering her. I am, almost, in fact, I am convinced that I was never in Tramps with her," Andrew stated to Newsnight in 2019. "There are several inaccuracies in that account, one of which is that I do not know the location of the bar in Tramps. I do not consume alcohol. I do not believe I have ever purchased a drink in Tramps whenever I was there."

In another heated exchange from his Newsnight interview, Maitlis raised Giuffre's memory of Andrew "sweating profusely" as they danced together at Tramps.

"There's a slight issue with the sweating because I possess a peculiar medical condition which means I do not sweat, or I did not sweat at that time, and that was... was it... yes, I did not sweat at that time because I had experienced what I would describe as an overdose of adrenaline during the Falklands War when I was shot at, and I simply... it was virtually impossible for me to sweat," he responded.

A photograph of Prince Andrew and Giuffre exists, although Andrew denied the "photograph was taken" by Epstein with the intention of compelling him to contribute to a rehabilitation of the financier's image.

"If that photograph was taken with that purpose in mind, then it doesn't... align with what actually transpired," he insisted.

Giuffre secured a defamation lawsuit victory against Maxwell in 2017 and settled a separate legal action with Epstein in 2009.

Epstein's Second Arrest

The financier was apprehended on federal charges of sex trafficking minors on July 6, 2019. Federal agents detained Epstein at Teterboro airport in New Jersey as he returned from a flight to Paris.

Episode Found Deceased

Epstein was discovered dead from a suspected suicide in his jail cell at New York City's Metropolitan Correctional Center on August 10, 2019.

Newsnight Interview

Prince Andrew participated in a 58-minute television interview with BBC Newsnight journalist Emily Maitlis, where he hesitated when questioned about regretting his friendship with Epstein.

"Still no, and the reason being is that the individuals I encountered and the opportunities I was given to learn, either through him or because of him, were actually quite valuable," Andrew replied. "He himself, not, so to speak, as close as you might assume; we weren't that intimate. So therefore, I mean, yes, I would visit and stay in his home, but that was due to his girlfriend, not because of him."

Addressing Giuffre's accusations, Andrew asserted he had "no recollection of ever meeting" her and denied any wrongdoing.

Taking a Step Back

In light of his disastrous Newsnight appearance, Andrew announced in November 2019 that he was withdrawing from royal duties.

"It has become apparent to me over the past few days that the circumstances related to my former association with Jeffrey Epstein have become a significant disruption to my family's work and the valuable work being done by the many organizations and charities that I am proud to support," he stated. "Therefore, I have requested Her Majesty's permission to step back from public duties for the foreseeable future, and she has granted it."

Lawsuit and Private Resolution

Giuffre accused Prince Andrew of sexual assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress in a lawsuit filed in 2021. Lawyers for the royal confirmed in February 2022 that he had settled the lawsuit for an undisclosed amount. Andrew continued to assert his innocence.

"Prince Andrew intends to make a substantial contribution to Ms. Giuffre's charitable organization in support of victims' rights," a letter from his attorneys read. "Prince Andrew has never sought to disparage Ms. Giuffre's character, and he acknowledges that she has suffered both as an established victim of abuse and as a consequence of unfair public attacks."

Giuffre died by suicide at age 41 in April 2025.

New Publication on Prince Andrew Reveals Alleged Emails

Andrew Lownie's revealing 2025 book, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, ignited a flurry of fresh allegations concerning the prince's connection to Epstein. Multiple U.K. news outlets published purported email correspondence between Andrew, his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, and Epstein.

One alleged email sent in 2011 saw Andrew writing to Epstein that they were "in this situation together and will need to overcome it." Another email allegedly sent after Ferguson publicly distanced herself from Epstein in 2011 saw her address the convicted sex offender as "a steadfast, generous, and unparalleled friend to me and my family."

In response to the resurfaced messages, Ferguson's spokesperson told BBC News: "The duchess expressed her regret about her association with Epstein many years ago, and as always, her primary concern is with his victims. Like many individuals, she was deceived by his falsehoods. As soon as she became aware of the full extent of the allegations against him, she not only severed contact but publicly condemned him, to the extent that he then threatened to sue her for defamation for associating him with paedophilia."

Prince Andrew Formally Resigns From Royal Duties, Relinquishes His Title

With tensions once again escalating over the Epstein scandal, Prince Andrew announced in October 2025 that he would renounce his royal title.

Virginia Giuffre: A Chronology of Significant Events Before Her Passing at 41

"In discussions with The King, and my immediate and extended family, we have concluded that the persistent accusations against me detract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family," Andrew stated in a message to Us on October 17, 2025. "I have decided, as I always have, to prioritize my duty to my family and country. I stand by my decision five years ago to withdraw from public life."

He concluded, "With His Majesty's consent, we feel I must now proceed further. I will therefore no longer employ my title or the honors that have been bestowed upon me. As I have stated previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me."
