Anthony Geary’s enduring legacy as General Hospital’s Luke Spencer.
The late Anthony Geary and his General Hospital co-star Genie Francis shared an enduring onscreen romance that viewers will not soon forget.
Devotees of the extended soap opera were deeply saddened by the announcement of Geary's passing on December 14, 2025, at the age of 78. The information was verified by his husband, Claudio Gama. Gama released a statement saying, “It came as a shock to me, our families, and our friends.” He added, “For over three decades, Tony was my friend, my partner, my husband.”
Geary appeared with Francis on General Hospital over multiple years. In her own tribute, Francis declared, “No performer shone more brightly than Tony Geary. He truly was unique. As an actor, he possessed an intense drive for authenticity, regardless of how direct or potentially impolite it became, yet he remained incredibly humorous.” She continued, “He embodied the anti-hero, consistently unconventional, causing even traditional individuals to crack a smile. Collaborating with him was consistently thrilling. The outcome was always unpredictable.”
Their chemistry was exceptional. In 1997, Francis once remarked to Soap Opera News, “I adore her. I adore her. I am so glad we never fell in love in real life because it could never be this good.”

Both Actors Sought to Advance Their Careers
Despite fan upset when the duo departed General Hospital in 1984, Francis explained in a February 1994 Soap Opera Digest interview that the separation was essential. She shared, “We experienced so much together.” Francis elaborated, “When we left, it felt enormous. Luke and Laura overshadowed Tony and Genie entirely. We both truly wished to progress and leave it behind. It resembles individuals who served together in the Vietnam War. I doubt they have weekly lunches to discuss it. We desired to move forward. This wasn't due to a lack of affection for one another – quite the opposite.”
Their Joint Decision to Rejoin the Show
While their 1984 departure disappointed fans, their return in October 1993 generated considerable enthusiasm. Francis disclosed in the same Soap Opera Digest interview that she felt uncertain about accepting the offer to return.
“I wasn't sure if I should take the role,” she clarified. “My agent would phone me and declare, ‘This indecision has lasted too long. You need to commit.’ I'd respond, ‘Alright, I'm making the call immediately.’ I'd hang up, my heart racing, and find myself breathing into a paper bag, before grabbing the phone to dial Tony [Geary, who portrays Luke]. Instead of calling ABC as intended, I called Tony every time! I'd ask him, ‘Do you think we're capable of this? What are your thoughts? Are you prepared?’”
In a February 1998 interview with the same publication, Geary shared that his return was conditional on Francis joining him. “[I would] never have reintroduced Luke without Laura, because she defines his character. His emotions, his existence, revolve around her. I had completely moved past Luke to the extent that I once couldn't recall his identity. However, when I sat down with Genie again, looking at her, touching her, sensing her presence, everything returned. I cannot perform this role without her.”
The Performers Shared Genuine Affection
While Francis encountered challenges regarding salary parity between herself and Geary, she assured Soap Opera News in June 1997 that her co-star was not to blame. She stated, “There is absolutely no conflict between Tony and me.” She added, “Tony and I care deeply for each other, and Tony desires for me to receive fair treatment just as he does. He doesn't seek dominance — that isn't his character. The issue does not stem from him in any way.”
They Experienced 'Exceptional' Instances Together
In a July 1997 interview with Soap Opera Digest, Geary complimented Francis's performance and their shared energy.
Francis said, “The last show on General Hospital on which the audience saw Luke and Laura together, Laura was pregnant. She told Luke about it. I’ll never forget doing that scene. Genie had no children at the time, and it was the first time she ever said those words to a man. She was so incredible that day. So beautiful. I’ll never forget how excited she was. I got swept up in it and thought afterward: I’ll never forget that. Nobody will ever tell me they are going to have my baby, and if they ever do, I will never feel like that. But the feeling of the moment was extraordinary.”
Tony Geary Discussed His Most Cherished Scene Featuring Luke and Laura
In a June 1997 conversation with Soap Opera News, Geary shared his top Luke and Laura scene:
“When Laura was abducted and absent for a year, Luke continued living his life. He was elected mayor of the city and evolved into the type of man she had always desired. He felt isolated and represented the peak of Port Charles's respectability,” he started.
“On the evening of his inauguration, he stands solitary in the mayor's residence and steps onto the balcony. I still get chills recalling that moment. It was an excellent portrayal of a man who achieved his ambition only to find it hollow. Suddenly, Laura appeared on the grass below, and he observed her, believing he was imagining things. He set down his champagne flute, and the instant their gazes connected, he sensed, ‘Oh my God, my God! She's alive, she's alive!’ It was incredibly moving because Genie and I were completely immersed in our characters,” Geary went on.
“Even following rehearsals, we remained in character. We share a deep connection. Nothing matters more to me on set than prompting Genie to laugh when she seems upset or having her simply touch my arm and whisper, ‘I understand, honey,’” he added. “It represents a creative partnership spanning two decades, full of unspoken understanding and affection. I adore her. I adore her. I am so glad we never fell in love in real life because it could never be this good. I couldn’t be unfaithful to Laura with Genie–not that I ever had the chance, mind you. She is a remarkably special individual. I once advised Jonathan Jackson, ‘Date an actress, but never marry one.’ That piece of advice will serve him better than any acting instruction I could ever give.”

It Was Acceptable for Their Characters to Part Ways
Throughout the actors' tenure on the soap, Luke and Laura experienced several separations and reunions. In a 2016 interview with Fox News, Geary justified why it was acceptable for Luke and Laura to diverge.
“It's better to leave the past in memory. Nothing remains static, except perhaps preserved butterflies. In drama, conflict and progression are necessary. The idea of a 65-year-old man gazing adoringly at his wife while feeding her strawberries and endlessly revisiting their prime years holds no interest for me,” he commented. “The [viewers] you mention consistently wished for Luke and Laura to remain happy and age together like Ward and June Cleaver. They resemble a child who never processed their parents' divorce and persistently hopes for their return. For various reasons, this resolution is unattainable. The audience must release this expectation and focus on tomorrow rather than dwelling on yesterday.”
