Barry Manilow Reveals Lung Cancer Diagnosis, Remains Optimistic for Recovery
Barry Manilow is feeling particularly thankful for his loved ones and supporters following his diagnosis of lung cancer.
On December 22, 2025, the Grammy-winning artist revealed that medical professionals identified a cancerous growth on his left lung requiring removal.
“As many of you are aware, I recently battled six weeks of bronchitis, followed by a recurrence lasting another five weeks. Despite recovering from the bronchitis and returning to perform at the Westgate Las Vegas, my excellent doctor requested an MRI to ensure my overall health,” Manilow shared through Instagram. “It’s simply fortunate (and thanks to a skilled doctor) that it was detected so early. That’s the positive aspect.”
The performer stated he will be having surgery to “eliminate the growth.” Currently, he does not anticipate needing chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

Who is Barry Manilow’s Husband?
Kief has been Manilow’s dedicated manager for many years, assuming the position shortly after they first met.
“Garry truly saved my life. As my career took off, things became incredibly hectic. Returning to an empty hotel room could lead to difficulties when you’re alone night after night,” Manilow explained in a November 2023 segment of Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? “But I connected with Garry around the time everything was escalating. I no longer had to face those solitary hotel rooms. I had someone to share my joys and sorrows with.”
Kief also serves as the president and CEO of Stiletto Entertainment and has collaborated with other clients, including Judy Garland‘s daughter Lorna Luft.
In his private life, Kief has one child from a previous relationship.
How Did Barry Manilow and Garry Kief First Meet?
Manilow and Kief were introduced back in 1978. During a 2017 conversation with People, the singer expressed it was instant attraction.
“I knew immediately that he was the one,” he conveyed to the publication. “I was among the fortunate few. I felt quite isolated before that … Garry wasn’t aware of my profession, despite my numerous records. He was simply a man, and I was a man, allowing us to interact as ordinary individuals, not as a celebrity and a fan.”

When Did Barry Manilow Publicly Come Out as Gay?
In 2015, the news of Manilow’s marriage and sexual orientation became public. After a period of contemplation, the singer describes the experience as “both a blessing and a challenge.”
“I worried that I would disappoint [my fans] if they knew I was gay. Therefore, I never addressed it,” Manilow told People in 2017. “When they learned that Garry and I were together, they were incredibly supportive. The response was truly heartwarming — strangers expressing, ‘Congratulations!’ I am deeply grateful for their acceptance.”
