Ben Stiller Reflects on Marriage Struggles and Parental Legacy in New Documentary

Ben Stiller acknowledged the difficulty of comparing his then-troubled relationship with Christine Taylor to the enduring union of his mother and father.

In his latest documentary, Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost, which debuted on Friday, October 17, the 59-year-old actor confessed to developing a “dislike” for collaborating with Taylor, 54, on professional endeavors. These negative emotions intensified when the couple decided to part ways in 2017, after 17 years of marriage.

“When our separation occurred, my sentiment was, like, ‘Oh, I’m not succeeding at this, and then I look at my parents. They possess this remarkable marriage spanning over 60 years, and I simply cannot measure up to that,’” Stiller revealed.

Stiller and Taylor eventually reconciled in early 2022, with him confirming their “happiness” to Esquire that February. Nevertheless, the versatile talent admitted that considerable effort and introspection were required to reach that harmonious state with his spouse.

“I sense that in our relationship, that was what you perceived from me when we first came together and began working professionally. I harbored this inherent reluctance …” Stiller elaborated.

The couple has appeared alongside each other in numerous productions, including Zoolander, Tropic Thunder, Dodgeball, Dedication, and Friendsgiving.

Taylor interjected, “I do feel there was a history there, and I believe much of it stemmed from your previous experiences regarding what that ultimately implied for a relationship. It can certainly add extra pressure when you are constantly in each other’s space in that manner. I also sensed a fear within you, concerning me, about how that might appear to the public. I mean, it was quite emotionally charged.”

Stiller confessed he was “feeling like, wait a moment, I do not wish to become my parents.”

The star of Meet the Parents was raised in an entertainment family; his father, Jerry Stiller, had a successful comedy career, notably starring in the popular sitcom The King of Queens, while his mother, Anne Meara, garnered critical acclaim for her performance in The Other Woman. (Jerry passed away in 2020 at the age of 92, and Meara died in 2015 at 85. The duo had been married for 61 years until her passing.)

“I recall my mother advising me, you know, you need to prioritize your family,” Ben recounted, hinting at his demanding work schedule which kept him away from his children, Ella, 23, and Quin, 20, for extended periods.

“I feel as though there was a time when work held significant importance, and as we discuss this, I now recognize that parallel with your father,” Taylor added. “But even when you produce truly excellent work, you will still perceive that one element that wasn't perfect. The setback. The utter defeat. And the behind-the-scenes way we navigated those challenges for you, it somewhat became us as a family asking, ‘What if?’ I believe the term is …” she paused, before Ben interjected to state, “It’s terrible.”

Taylor remembered Meara offering her counsel when she was experiencing difficulties in her marriage to Ben.

“Also, do not attempt to pretend it isn’t impacting you. For better or worse, articulate it,” she implored. “I remember Anne drawing me aside, saying, ‘Look after yourself.’ She supported me — and you were her son!”

Enthusiasts of the couple first encountered the documentary during its October 5 debut at the New York Film Festival and were particularly moved by Ben’s openness regarding his personal challenges amidst the COVID-19 global health crisis.

“My professional trajectory had been successful for a considerable time, but things in my personal sphere were not actually going well,” he stated. “I simply felt unbalanced and unhappy, somewhat disconnected from my family, from my children, and rather adrift.”

Ben continued, “I began to contemplate my parents and all the stress and tension I recall witnessing as a child, along with the pressures they faced when collaborating professionally, and how they managed to stay together through it all. … I believe I yearned to somehow comprehend their methods.”
