Ben Stiller's Sister Amy Stiller Opens Up About Her Struggles and Triumphs in New Documentary
While Ben Stiller is known for his comedic lineage, his 2025 documentary, Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost, offered a candid look into his bond with his sister, Amy Stiller.
Born to comedian Jerry Stiller and actress Anne Meara in 1961 and 1965, respectively, Amy and Ben grew up in the shadow of their famous parents. While Ben quickly found success in acting in the late ‘80s and ‘90s — mirroring his parents’ stardom — Amy revealed in the film that she faced considerable challenges trying to achieve similar professional triumphs.
“I was given numerous chances, yet I couldn’t capitalize on them,” she disclosed. “I lacked a sense of self, and looking back, that period was incredibly agonizing.”
Eventually, she managed to conquer those periods of self-doubt and has since accumulated over 50 performance credits in the entertainment world.

Who Is Amy Stiller?
Amy is the older child of Jerry and Meara. She and Ben were raised in New York City by their celebrated parents, who first rose to fame as a stand-up comedy duo before pursuing individual ventures. Jerry became widely recognized for his parts in Seinfeld and The King of Queens, while Meara gained prominence from Rhoda and The Other Woman. (Meara passed away in 2015 at 85, and Jerry in 2020 at 92.)
The Stiller children experienced the life of performers early on when Jerry and Meara brought them onto a talk show in 1974. During that television appearance, Amy and Ben played their violins for the camera as their parents watched, amused.
“They simply needed to fill that segment, choose a sketch,” Ben recounted to The Sunday Times in October 2025 regarding the incident. “They believed it would be charming, and I never felt they were trying to exploit us. They were simply aiming to entertain.”
Although family life often appeared idyllic to the public, Ben admitted that his and Amy’s parents’ constant work schedule was difficult for them.
“I just recall missing them profoundly,” Ben stated. “And upon their return, my sister and I would put on performances of Jesus Christ Superstar or similar shows in the living room.”
Amy Stiller Found It Difficult to Get Her Big Break
Ben briefly served as a writer for Saturday Night Live in the years leading up to his major success in 1998’s There’s Something About Mary. More comedic roles followed, propelling Ben further into the public eye while Amy was working as a waitress.
“I distinctly remember when I portrayed the Nurse [in] Romeo and Juliet, I just knew I wanted to do this,” she expressed in the documentary. “That’s why all those years I was waitressing and you were becoming famous, do you realize how incredibly difficult that was for me? Some of it built character, but only to a certain extent.”
Ben concurred that his sister endured a “challenging path” and encountered “highs and lows” during that period. In particular, Amy recalled her connection with Jerry and how it prevented her from chasing some of the prospects she longed for.
“Dad had an excessive protectiveness that would inhibit me, and I felt, like, paralyzed,” Amy reflected. “The truth is, you had something you could truly dedicate yourself to. I don’t recall, for myself, anything I felt that passionate about.”

She further elaborated that being the firstborn of two Hollywood icons created immense pressure to meet expectations.
“I just felt overwhelmed because I was the oldest,” Amy stated. “It was as if I carried all these expectations. And it was a truly demanding era for women.”
Ben echoed the sentiment that being the children of celebrated parents made it impossible to “fail without notice,” as much of their personal lives were openly presented for the world to observe.
Amy Stiller Became an Actress
Amy’s journey to recognition might not have been straightforward, but today, she is living her dream. Much like her parents and brother, Amy is an actress whose filmography includes Highway to Hell, Law & Order, Friends, and Freaks and Geeks. She has appeared in several productions alongside Ben, such as Meet the Parents, Zoolander, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Little Fockers, and Zoolander 2.
Amy guest-starred on an episode of Ben’s critically acclaimed Apple TV+ hit, Severance, in 2022. More recently, she performed in the 2025 short film Fire at Will. She also gained acclaim for her solo performance recounting her unconventional life, Just Trust.
Amy Is an Aunt
Amy gained another role — that of an aunt — when Ben welcomed his first child, daughter Ella, with his wife Christine Taylor in 2002. Their family grew again in 2005 when Christine gave birth to their son Quinlin.
Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost is currently showing in select cinemas and will be available to stream on Apple TV+ starting October 24.
