Brie Bird's Mother Shares Heartbreaking Update on Her Battle with Stage IV Cancer

The mother of social media personality Brie Bird is updating her followers on Brie's ongoing fight against stage IV cancer.

"As much as I want the miracle so badly, l feel like the 'realistic' part of my mind is grasping for my heart, trying to pull it back into my chest, and tell my soul that I need to surrender; and I don’t want to do that," Kendra Bird shared on Instagram on Monday, October 27. "It's not in a mother’s nature to say, 'I’m not powerful enough to change the circumstances,' and yet I’ve had to accept that. I want to fix it! Why can’t I fix it!?"

Accompanying this reflection, Kendra posted a picture of her family on the @briestrongerthancancer Instagram profile, an account boasting over 980,000 followers.

"We have many beautiful moments in our home, and this one stood out to me. As I sat by Brielle’s bedside one morning, she turned over and said, 'Someone is talking to me from heaven, an older person, I don’t know if it was a grandma or grandpa; they said my name,' " Kendra recounted. "I of course, put on my brave face, and asked her what else the angels are saying to her. She couldn’t keep her eyes open for long, but reassured me that she would let me know what else they say.”

She added, "She has spent the majority of the week sleeping, her face, feet, and abdomen are swollen with fluid, she has ceased eating, and requires oxygen quite often. I am in pain. Each day carries a profound weight.”

Nine-year-old Brie received her diagnosis of stage 4 cancer five years ago. She entered hospice care earlier in the current year. In September, Kendra revealed her inspiration stemmed from Today’s Sheinelle Jones's discussion of "discovering beauty amidst sorrow" following the passing of her husband, Uche Ojeh, who succumbed to cancer earlier in the year.

"She states that 'despite progressing, seizing every opportunity from life, she is actively pursuing her happiness,' " Kendra wrote on Instagram regarding Jones. "I frequently get asked, 'How are you?' This question has become one I not only struggle to answer but also feel I am being entirely dishonest if I offer brief responses. I understand that people are aware of our situation, and reflecting on their knowledge and my true state of brokenness, I can no longer bring myself to say, 'hanging in there' anymore. I am shattered and in distress. From now on, my reply will be, 'I'm fighting for my joy.'"

She went on, "Each day presents us with a choice. A choice to 'extract all we can from life,' a choice to demonstrate love and support for others, to cultivate greater acceptance, kindness, comprehension, and empathy. On certain days, this may appear more challenging, but that is acceptable, as it provides an opportunity for personal growth. Life is demanding, but strive for your happiness! You are worthy of it. Those around you are worthy of it. And if someone struggles to find their happiness, champion theirs as well."

Jones responded in the comments, "This deeply moves me."
