Britney Spears Fires Back at Ex Kevin Federline's Memoir Amidst Child Support Cessation

Pop icon Britney Spears has responded forcefully to the imminent release of her former husband Kevin Federline’s memoir, titled You Thought You Knew.

“As details emerge from Kevin’s forthcoming publication, it’s clear he and others are once again capitalizing on her story, which unfortunately coincides with the cessation of child support payments from Kevin,” a spokesperson for Spears, aged 43, communicated in an official statement to Us Weekly on Tuesday, October 14. “Her paramount concern remains the welfare of her children, Sean Preston and Jayden James, amidst this heightened media attention.”

Spears' representative further noted that the celebrated singer had already “chronicled her personal experiences in her own memoir,” The Woman in Me, released last year in 2023.

Federline’s book, set for release on October 21, delves into his marriage to Spears and the events following her contentious conservatorship. The former couple tied the knot in 2004 and separated in 2007, raising two sons together: Sean Preston, now 20, and Jayden James, 19. Not even a year after their divorce was finalized, Britney’s father, Jamie Spears, established a conservatorship over her affairs, subsequent to what was publicly reported as a mental health crisis.

Kevin Federline Alleges Children Discovered Britney Spears Holding a Knife Upon Waking

An excerpt from the former backup dancer's book, released by the New York Times on Tuesday, reveals Federline’s assertion that Sean Preston and Jayden James experienced fear when staying with their mother.

“Occasionally, they would wake during the night to see her standing quietly in their doorway, observing them as they slept — ‘Oh, you’re awake?’ — while holding a knife,” Federline recounted. “She would then quietly leave without offering any explanation.”

Federline additionally recounted what he described as “one of the most challenging nights” he had ever experienced, pertaining to Spears’ involuntary psychiatric commitment in 2008 following an incident involving their sons.

“I was deeply troubled by her struggles,” Federline wrote. “This was a person I had once loved. A partner with whom I had built a life. The mother of my boys.”

Federline also addressed the Free Britney movement — the widespread public demand for the termination of Jamie’s conservatorship over the pop sensation. (The conservatorship was officially dissolved by a judge in November 2021.)

Within his book, Federline expressed his opinion that the movement might have caused more detriment than benefit. He also offered his thoughts on his former wife’s presence on social media.

“Honestly, Britney’s current circumstances seem to be hurtling towards an irreversible point,” Federline penned. “It’s no longer feasible to feign normalcy. From my perspective, time is running out, and we’re nearing a critical juncture. A negative outcome is inevitable if changes aren't made, and my greatest apprehension is that our children will be the ones to bear the consequences.”

The Rationale Behind Britney Spears' Ex-Husband Kevin Federline's Memoir Release Now

During a conversation with The New York Times, Federline disclosed that he hadn't communicated with his former spouse “for a number of years,” yet he reaffirmed his support for her during some of her most arduous periods.

“I have never, at any point, been in opposition to Britney,” he asserted. “My sole endeavor has been to facilitate an exceptional bond between my sons and their mother. It’s a challenge because, upon genuine reflection of all that has transpired — my children are unfamiliar with the woman I married. And for twenty years, I’ve dedicated myself to bridging that divide.”

Britney and her sons had experienced a period of estrangement after the termination of her conservatorship. Consequently, Sean Preston and Jayden James relocated to Hawaii with their father. Nevertheless, the pop sensation and her children reconnected earlier this year.

You Thought You Knew will be accessible at booksellers starting next Tuesday, October 21.
