Bryant Gumbel Hospitalized Following Medical Emergency

Bryant Gumbel, known for his past role as a cohost on Today, was admitted to a hospital in New York City.

On Tuesday, October 21, TMZ was the initial source to report that Gumbel experienced a “medical emergency.” According to the publication, he was taken from his Manhattan residence to a nearby hospital following 9 p.m. on Monday, October 20.

Reports indicate that the former TV personality is still in the hospital as of Tuesday. While a family member informed TMZ that Gumbel is “OK,” no additional specifics regarding his condition were disclosed.

Gumbel started his tenure at Today in 1982, leaving the NBC program in 1997 to join CBS. He disclosed in 2009 that he underwent an operation to extract a cancerous tumor and a portion of his lung.

“There’s no reason to keep it a secret,” Gumbel stated during a 2009 broadcast of Live With Regis and Kelly. “My chest was opened, a cancerous growth and a section of my lung were removed, along with a few other items. While most of the extracted tissue was benign, a sufficient number of aggressive cells had spread from the tumor, necessitating treatment, which I have completed.”

In the subsequent year, Gumbel provided an encouraging update about his well-being.

“My health continues to be good,” he informed People then. “Physicians assure me I am healthy, and I anticipate improved circumstances.”

Several months prior to Gumbel’s hospital admission, he awarded Today cohost Al Roker with a Lifetime Achievement Award during the 2025 News & Documentary Emmy Awards ceremony.

“I am immensely proud yet also modest to accept the @theemmys.tv Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to me by my close friend, Bryant Gumbel,” Roker posted on Instagram in June, sharing pictures from the occasion. The presence of my brother, @christopher_roker, his wife, @hardyroker, and @nickroker155 was significant. Furthermore, congratulations to @debrobertsabc on her induction into the Silver Circle. My gratitude to @adamsharpct for a wonderful evening.”

Under a year before Bryant was hospitalized, his brother, the long-serving CBS sportscaster Greg Gumbel, passed away at 78. His demise was confirmed through a statement issued by his wife, Marcy, and their daughter Michelle.

“We announce with deep sorrow the loss of our cherished husband and father, Greg Gumbel,” the statement conveyed previously. “He departed peacefully, enveloped by abundant affection, following a brave struggle with cancer. Greg confronted his sickness precisely as anticipated: with resilience, dignity, and an optimistic outlook.”

The statement went on to say, “He leaves behind a heritage of affection, motivation, and commitment across more than five decades of remarkable work in sports broadcasting; and his recognizable voice will remain indelible. Greg’s remembrance will be cherished perpetually by his loved ones, closest companions, professional associates, and all who held him dear.”

Greg anchored CBS’s The NFL Today with Terry Bradshaw and spearheaded the NCAA’s March Madness tournament coverage from 1998 until 2023. The subsequent year, he withdrew due to “family health issues,” as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

David Berson, who serves as president of CBS Sports, also honored Greg in a public statement.

“No individual in the history of television has been a more distinguished gentleman,” Berson communicated in a statement, cited by Entertainment Weekly. “He was admired and esteemed by all of us privileged to count him as both a friend and coworker. An exceptional broadcaster and talented narrator, Greg forged one of the most extraordinary and pioneering careers in sports broadcasting history.”
