Bryant Gumbel Surfaces with Friends After Hospital Stay
Bryant Gumbel is now enjoying his time with loved ones and friends after his recent stay in the hospital.
The 77-year-old former Today cohost and his wife, Hilary Gumbel, had dinner with Al Roker, 71, and his wife, Deborah Roberts, at Daniel Boulud’s La Tête d’Or steakhouse in New York, as shown in pictures Roker posted on Instagram on Thursday, October 30. In one image, the group was seated around their table, while a second photo captured the four standing together and smiling for the camera.
“Dinner with good friends, @hilary_gumbel and Bryant Gumbel at the fabulous @latetedorbydaniel,” Roker captioned his post. “Great conversation and great food! Thanks, Elvir Dzananovic and @danielboulud.”
In the comments section, many followers expressed their relief that Bryant was recovering.
A Glimpse Into the Life of Former 'Today' Show Cohost Bryant Gumbel Beyond the Public Eye
“It's good to hear Bryant is improving. I always appreciated his presence on the Today Show,” one user commented, while another follower remarked, “Pleased to see BG appearing well and hopefully feeling better.”
Both Hilary and Roberts, aged 65, shared the same images on their respective Instagram Stories.
“An ideal method to appreciate the blessing of good health! With @deborahrobertsabc and Al Roker,” Hilary posted.
Roberts' accompanying comment stated, “Companionship means the world!”
Certainly, Bryant and Roker share a long-standing bond, originating from Bryant's tenure on Today between 1982 and 1997. In June, Bryant honored Roker by presenting him with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 News & Documentary Emmy Awards ceremony.
Roker posted on Instagram then, stating, “Immensely proud yet humbled to accept the @theemmys.tv Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to me by my close friend, Bryant Gumbel.” He continued, “Having my brother, @christopher_roker, his wife, @hardyroker, and @nickroker155 there made it especially significant. And congratulations to @debrobertsabc on her induction into the Silver Circle. My gratitude to @adamsharpct for a splendid evening.”
This joint outing by Bryant and Hilary with Roker and Roberts occurred soon after TMZ reported on October 21 that Bryant had been admitted to the hospital due to a “medical emergency.” The media source indicated that the former host of Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel was taken from his Manhattan apartment building to a nearby hospital shortly after 9 p.m. on the day prior.
A family member of Bryant's informed the publication he was “fine” but declined to share additional specifics regarding his medical condition.
Hilary subsequently posted an image on her Instagram Story featuring sunlight filtering through autumn foliage on a tree, accompanied by the word, “Thankfulness.”
Although the precise date of Bryant's discharge from the hospital remains unknown, he and Hilary were seen strolling through New York City on October 25. Bryant seemed cheerful as he and his wife walked their canine companion.
Understanding Al Roker’s Absence From ‘Today’: What's His Current Whereabouts?
Bryant had confronted health challenges before, undergoing an operation in 2009 to excise a malignant growth and a section of his lung.
During an appearance on Live With Regis and Kelly back then, he clarified, “There's no reason to conceal it.” He elaborated, “My chest was opened, a malignant tumor was removed, along with a portion of my lung and some other elements. While the pathology for most of it was benign, a sufficient number of aggressive cells had separated from the tumor, necessitating treatment, which I completed, and it's now concluded.”
A year subsequently, Bryant provided an update on his physical state.
In 2010, he informed People, “My condition remains good.” He added, “Physicians have assured me I am completely healthy, so I anticipate a brighter future.”
