Cameron Mathison on Unexpected Reunion with Estranged Wife After Wildfires
The news of a split from his estranged wife, Vanessa Mathison, caught beloved soap actor Cameron Mathison by surprise, as he recently revealed.
“It was a challenging period when we first went our separate ways, complicated by numerous factors that made it exceptionally difficult,” the 56-year-old actor shared on Jennie Garth’s “I Choose” podcast on Monday, September 9, elaborating that the dissolution of his marriage “was indeed an unexpected turn of events” for him.
Intriguingly, it was several months following their initial separation that the catastrophic L.A. wildfires inadvertently played a role in fostering a renewed connection between the former couple.
“We had been officially separated for approximately eighteen months by then — possibly a bit more — yet the emotional impact still felt incredibly raw,” he elaborated.

The esteemed General Hospital star acknowledged that he and Vanessa are “continuing to navigate complexities” in the wake of their separation, but a surprising cohabitation, necessitated by the January fires that razed his home, serendipitously helped to mend some of the distance between them.
“While a profound affection remains between us, that period was also fraught with considerable heartache. I genuinely believe — and I sense Vanessa shares this sentiment, as we’ve discussed it — that in the immediate aftermath of the fire, when I resided in the children’s room at her residence,” Cameron recounted, “it was as though experiencing that collective trauma simply dissolved much of the lingering negativity, effectively compressing that [post-split] healing process.”
In the quiet aftermath, the former couple discovered a “genuine haven of affection, consideration, and mutual encouragement.”
“We offered each other unwavering presence, sharing tears, conversations, and embraces,” he remembered. “It wasn't a signal of reconciliation, but rather an intimate closeness, a shared burden that remained private, known only to us.”
A Look Back: Unforgettable Celebrity Separations
Cameron and Vanessa exchanged vows in 2002, building a family with their son Lucas, now 22, and daughter Leila, 19. The couple officially announced their decision to separate in July 2024.
“Following 22 years of matrimony, we have arrived at the arduous choice to embark on separate paths. We approach this forthcoming chapter grounded in profound love, gentleness, and mutual esteem. Our hearts are filled with appreciation for the remarkable years we spent side by side,” they conveyed in a joint communiqué then. “Our children have always been, and will remain, our foremost concern, and our dedication and affection for them will forever be a shared bond.”
Speaking exclusively to Us Weekly in March, Cameron divulged that despite their separation, he and Vanessa maintain an “exceptionally close bond.”
“Vanessa and I, our love for one another endures,” he further stated. “My wife and I built a magnificent 22-year relationship, but eventually, circumstances led to its unraveling.”
