Candiace Dillard Bassett Stunned by RHOP Co-Star Wendy Osefo's Arrest and Fraud Charges

Former Real Housewives of Potomac cast member Candiace Dillard Bassett expressed profound shock upon learning of the arrest of her co-star Wendy Osefo and her husband Eddie Osefo.

“I’m stunned. I’m distraught,” the 38-year-old Candiace relayed during her FOX 5 DC segment on Friday, October 10. The ex-Bravo personality revealed she felt “trembling” after being informed of the Osefos' apprehension moments before the live broadcast began.

“I am quite literally receiving this information at the same time as you are,” she stated. “My immediate reaction is that for $300, a mother and a father, who are also successful business owners and entrepreneurs, are being taken into custody.”

She further commented, “While the specific charges remain unknown, it is widely recognized that the Osefos operate a highly successful cannabis enterprise. They are generating employment and prospects for minority individuals within the greater D.C. metropolitan area. My initial concern is, ‘Could they be targets, is this a situation warranting further consideration?’”

Deconstructing the Fraud Arrest of RHOP Personality Wendy Osefo and Her Spouse

Us Weekly verified on Friday that both Wendy and Eddie, aged 41, had been apprehended and processed in Westminster, Maryland, the previous day. Official court papers disclosed that a grand jury had charged Wendy with insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud, and providing a false statement to law enforcement.

In the course of her Friday interview, Candiace referenced fellow RHOP personality Karen Huger, who was freed from incarceration the previous month following a 2024 DUI apprehension.

“Karen has recently returned home. Karen fulfilled her obligation to society,” Candiace noted. “However, one could speculate that perhaps Karen was used as a cautionary tale.”

Candiace expressed being “devastated” by the full scope of Wendy's predicament.

“We communicate frequently via text. She gave no indication that anything was amiss. I’m taken aback, and it truly seems as though someone is targeting our group of women,” Candiace elaborated. “How can two women from the same program — a show highlighting African American women, particularly in today’s social environment where individuals are being detained and removed from public spaces for trivial reasons. I want to review all the facts before forming my conclusive opinions.”

The apprehension of Wendy and Eddie occurs over a year after the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office investigated a purported break-in at their residence. The pair asserted in April 2024 that, following a vacation to Jamaica, they returned to discover their house vandalized, with claims of numerous high-end handbags and jewelry items missing.

Eddie provided reports to two different insurance providers concerning the allegedly pilfered possessions at that period. Both Eddie and Wendy endorsed declarations asserting $2,500 in damage to their dwelling and $450,000 for property losses.

Subsequent to the reported break-in, inconsistencies appeared in the roster of absent articles. Forty-eight hours after the supposed event, Eddie revised the insurance submission to incorporate Wendy’s gold diamond anniversary ring. They were awarded a $25,380 payout from Travelers Insurance stemming from this claim.

The subsequent filing, submitted to Jewelers Mutual Insurance, also enumerated Wendy’s gold anniversary ring among the missing items. However, the Travelers Insurance remuneration was omitted from this documentation.

Law enforcement officers grew suspicious, having reportedly observed photographs of Wendy adorned with the purportedly pilfered band in images taken after the ostensible April 2024 burglary. A search and seizure order was carried out at the Osefos' residence, revealing that a minimum of 15 articles they had reported as stolen during the alleged larceny remained on the premises.

The inquiry determined that the Osefos were “encumbered by considerable financial obligations,” according to legal papers acquired by Us.

“Dr. Wendy Osefo and her husband, Edward Osefo, have returned home safely to their family and maintain positive spirits. They extend their gratitude for the abundance of concern and encouragement from acquaintances, admirers, and professional associates,” a spokesperson for the couple informed Us Weekly on Friday. “The Osefos, with their legal counsel, anticipate their upcoming court appearance. Presently, they respectfully request discretion as they prioritize their family and navigate the forthcoming legal proceedings.”
