Caroline Kennedy’s Daughter, Tatiana Schlossberg, Dies at 35 After Cancer Battle

Tatiana Schlossberg, the daughter of Caroline Kennedy and granddaughter of the late U.S. president John F. Kennedy, received a prognosis of approximately one year to live following a cancer diagnosis in 2024.

Schlossberg disclosed in a November 2025 essay published in The New Yorker that she was battling acute myeloid leukemia and that her illness was considered terminal.

Just one month after the essay’s release, Schlossberg’s family announced the passing of the environmental journalist at the age of 35.

“Our beloved Tatiana passed away earlier today. She will forever remain in our hearts,” the JFK Library Foundation shared in a statement via Instagram on December 30, 2025.

Tatiana Schlossberg Was Diagnosed With Cancer in May 2024

Tatiana revealed in her New Yorker essay that she received a cancer diagnosis shortly after welcoming her daughter in May 2024. Her physician noticed an irregularity in her white blood cell count and initially suspected it was related to her pregnancy. However, they subsequently discovered she had “a rare genetic alteration called Inversion 3.”

Tatiana recalled being informed that she would not “be healed by standard treatment”.

“I simply did not — could not — believe they were speaking about me. I had swum a mile in the pool the day before, nine months pregnant. I wasn’t ill. I didn’t feel unwell. I was actually one of the healthiest individuals I knew,” she wrote. “I had a son whom I cherished more than anything and a newborn I needed to care for.”

Following her daughter’s birth, Tatiana spent five weeks at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital and was then transferred to Memorial Sloan Kettering for a bone-marrow transplant. She also received chemotherapy at home.

In January, Tatiana participated in a clinical trial of CAR-T-cell therapy, a form of immunotherapy targeting specific blood cancers. However, she later learned that her cancer was incurable.

What Is Acute Myeloid Leukemia?

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a rare form of cancer that impacts the bone marrow and blood, according to Cleveland Clinic.

“It’s an aggressive cancer that, if left untreated, can be life-threatening,” Cleveland Clinic states. “AML typically affects individuals age 60 and older, but it can affect younger adults and children. Newer therapies are helping people to live longer with AML.”

Tatiana Schlossberg Shared Details About Her Cancer Diagnosis in November 2025

In her essay, Tatiana reflected on her anxieties when she first learned about her cancer, revealing that her “initial thought” was about her children potentially not remembering her after her death.

“My son might have a few memories, but he’ll likely begin to confuse them with pictures he sees or stories he hears. I didn’t really get to nurture my daughter — I was unable to change her diaper or give her a bath or feed her, all due to the risk of infection after my transplants. I was absent for nearly half of her first year of life. I’m uncertain who, truly, she thinks I am, and whether she will feel or recall, when I am gone, that I am her mother.”

Tatiana also expressed gratitude for the support of her siblings and husband throughout her experience.

“George did everything for me that he possibly could. He spoke with all the doctors and insurance representatives that I didn’t want to speak with; he slept on the floor of the hospital; he didn’t become upset when I was experiencing the effects of steroids and yelled at him that I didn’t like Schweppes ginger ale, only Canada Dry. He would return home to put our children to bed and then come back to bring me dinner,” she wrote.

Tatiana continued, “I know that not everyone can be married to a doctor, but, if you can, it’s a very beneficial idea. He is perfect, and I feel so deprived and so saddened that I don’t get to continue living the wonderful life I had with this kind, humorous, handsome genius I managed to find.”
