CBS Evening News Loses Second Anchor in Weeks as Maurice DuBois Departs

UPDATE 12/5/2025 at 12:36 p.m. ET — Esteemed CBS Evening News anchor Maurice DuBois has confirmed his departure from the broadcasting company, coming only weeks after his coanchor John Dickerson made known his own intentions to leave.

“Time to move forward: My final broadcast with CBS News will be on December 18th,” DuBois, aged 60, posted on Instagram on Thursday, December 4. “It has truly been a life-changing honor. A total of 21 years, counting my tenure at WCBS-TV in New York City. Such an incredible opportunity!”

DuBois further expressed, “To be welcomed into your homes nightly, delivering the news / encountering remarkable individuals and sharing their narratives. I will leave feeling immense gratitude, cherished connections, and wonderful memories. Just a couple of weeks remain; until then, I’ll see you on The CBS Evening News every night at 6:30.”

DuBois commenced his employment at CBS in September 2004 as an anchor for WCBS-TV (CBS 2) in New York City. He and Dickerson, 57, were appointed coanchors of CBS Evening News in August 2024.

CBS Evening News anchor John Dickerson has unexpectedly declared his resignation following 16 years with the network.

“Regarding my current position: By the close of this year, I will be stepping away from CBS, sixteen years after I first filled in as anchor for Face the Nation,” Dickerson, 57, shared on Instagram, accompanied by career photos, on Monday, October 27. “I am profoundly thankful for everything CBS has afforded me — the work, the audience’s attention, and the distinction of contributing to the network’s heritage — and I am grateful for my esteemed colleagues who have helped me grow as both a journalist and a person. I will miss you all.”

Dickerson did not disclose a rationale for his exit, nor did he mention any future endeavors.

CBS News president Tom Cibrowski stated that Dickerson “embodies the pinnacle of journalism,” as reported by USA Today.

“We will have ample time to acknowledge his efforts here and commend his contributions to our achievements,” the statement concluded.

Dickerson joined CBS in 2009 and served as host for the network’s public affairs program Face the Nation on three occasions that year before subsequently assuming the full hosting role from 2015 to 2018. He also became CBS News’ political director in 2011.

After stepping down from Face the Nation, Dickerson was named the new coanchor of CBS This Morning. He maintained this position until January of this year, when he and Maurice DuBois became the coanchors of CBS Evening News, succeeding Norah O’Donnell.

CBS announced the decision to transfer Dickerson and DuBois, 60, to the evening news broadcast in August 2024, revealing that O’Donnell, 51, would take on an expanded role as a CBS News senior correspondent.

“We wish to express our appreciation to Norah for her outstanding work on the Evening News over the past five years, and we are pleased she has chosen to continue leading our coverage through the election,” Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of CBS News & Stations and CBS Media Ventures, remarked in a statement at that time. “Norah’s new capacity will enable her to contribute across CBS and Paramount, allowing us to see more of the groundbreaking reports and interviews that have defined her career. Her exceptional talent lies in her ability to secure and deliver significant interviews and newsworthy stories that shape the news cycle and capture public attention. We anticipate elevating and showcasing Norah’s reporting now and in the future.”

McMahon further noted, “With Norah’s decision, we began rethinking and restructuring the Evening News. The fundamental strength of CBS News has always resided in its collective of journalists, both on-screen and behind the scenes, and our objective with John, Maurice, Margaret, and Lonnie at the Evening News is to highlight the best in their fields every night for our viewers. In addition to this collective team, we look forward to welcoming ’60 Minutes’ correspondents to report for the ‘CBS Evening News’ when they have breaking news; for decades this was standard practice, so it will be once more.”

Dickerson’s exit from the network also follows the appointment of former New York Times journalist and cofounder and CEO of The Free Press, Bari Weiss, as CBS News’ editor in chief earlier this month. Paramount acquired The Free Press as part of this arrangement.

“We are delighted to welcome Bari and The Free Press to Paramount and CBS News. Bari is a recognized advocate for independent, principled journalism, and I am confident her entrepreneurial drive and editorial vision will energize CBS News,” David Ellison, Chairman and CEO of Paramount, stated. “This initiative is part of Paramount’s broader strategy to modernize content and how it connects — directly and passionately — with audiences globally.”
