Cheryl Burke Still Mourns Her Marriage to Matthew Lawrence Even Years Later

Despite her separation from Matthew Lawrence concluding years ago, Cheryl Burke reveals she occasionally still mourns the end of their marriage.

The former Dancing with the Stars professional, aged 41, discussed her divorce on the October 2nd Thursday installment of the “I Do, Part 2” podcast.

In a conversation about high-profile divorces with Jen Fessler, Burke confessed that her personal divorce had “challenged” her significantly.

Nevertheless, she highlighted that the dissolution of her marriage was not the sole major alteration she experienced that year – she also departed from DWTS following 26 seasons as a professional dancer. Furthermore, she relocated from the residence she had occupied for more than ten years.

“It wasn’t exclusively the split from my former partner. It encompassed the departure from Dancing with the Stars all within a single year, coupled with vacating the home I inhabited for sixteen years and moving to my current location,” Burke elaborated. “Therefore, it felt like everything was occurring simultaneously in one year, and those represent three significant life shifts. It’s often said that if you encounter five in one year, you're quite likely to admit yourself to the closest mental health facility.”

Although Burke maintained that she harbors no regrets regarding the circumstances of her divorce from Lawrence, 45, she admitted to experiencing sporadic feelings of sorrow about it.

“To claim I haven't or don't still sometimes mourn would also be untrue. I believe it’s possible for both to be true, you understand?” she stated. “I recognize that I had to sever ties from essentially both separations to be able to perceive what I observe in the mirror and genuinely appreciate the individual I see.”

She further commented that while the transformations seemed to unfold rapidly, they had been brewing for an extended period.

“I believe that despite their swift occurrence, these weren't merely sudden choices. These were matters that had been dormant within me for numerous years,” she clarified.

On the podcast installment, Burke verified that she and the Mrs Doubtfire star had executed a prenuptial agreement prior to their 2019 wedding – a subject she has addressed on previous occasions.

Burke disclosed on the identical podcast in October 2024 that she requested Lawrence agree to a prenuptial agreement before their marriage.

“It represented a final demand. It was an absolute ultimatum,” she stated. “It comprised approximately 70 to 85 pages filled with extensive wording, minute details, and small print. However, my legal counsel recommended ensuring I also secured an attorney for him. So, that was unequivocally part of the arrangement.”

The professional dancer ultimately declined to marry without a formal agreement established.

“It generated numerous apprehensions, particularly from his perspective. Yet, there wasn't much room for negotiation,” she remarked. “We either proceed with this and marry, or we don't. It's quite straightforward.”

Burke and Lawrence initially became romantically involved in 2007, only to separate a year afterward. They rekindled their relationship in 2017 and proceeded with their nuptials two years subsequently. Burke initiated divorce proceedings against Lawrence in 2022. Following their breakup, Lawrence has begun a new relationship with TLC vocalist, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas.
