Chloe Malle Steps into Vogue's Editorial Helm, Following Illustrious Family Legacy

Chloe Malle has been appointed to the esteemed role of head of editorial content at American Vogue, forging a unique career path reminiscent of her renowned mother, Candice Bergen, and her late father, Louis Malle.
With her recent significant ascent into this new position, following the departure of fashion and media titan Anna Wintour from her editor-in-chief post earlier this year, it's perhaps not unexpected that Malle's parents are celebrated as prominent figures in the entertainment industry themselves.
However, she emphasized that the "nepo baby" label often used by detractors only spurred her to "put in significantly more effort," as she conveyed in an interview with The New York Times after her promotion was announced on September 2, 2025.
“Both the fashion and media landscapes are undergoing rapid transformations, and I am immensely excited – and humbled – to contribute to this evolution,” she informed the publication then, noting her readiness to lead. “Furthermore, I feel remarkably lucky to have Anna's continued guidance as a mentor, just a short distance away.”

Candice Bergen: An Acclaimed Emmy-Winning Actress
Bergen's name might resonate with many, given her widespread recognition for her part in the successful series Murphy Brown, a role that earned her five Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes. Her portrayal of Shirley Schmidt in Boston Legal also garnered significant attention.
Amusingly, the actress also depicted an unforgettable character named Enid Frick, a fictional editor-in-chief for Vogue, in Sex and the City. Her appearances included three episodes across seasons 4, 5, and 6, along with the initial 2008 film.
Enthusiasts were equally delighted when Enid reprised her role in the second season of And Just Like That.
During her career ascent in Hollywood, Bergen additionally earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the 1979 film Starting Over.
Louis Malle: A Distinguished French Filmmaker
Louis was also a highly regarded talent, garnering three Academy Award nominations: for best writing for 1973’s Murmur of the Heart, best director for Atlantic City in 1982, and best writing for Au Revoir les Enfants in 1988.
Tragically, Louis passed away from complications of lymphoma when Chloe was just ten years old.
“Chloe truly forged a bond with her father, one that had been challenging due to the unavoidable geographical distances between our homes in Los Angeles and France,” Bergen shared with NPR in 2015. “She understood that her role was to care for her father.”
“She managed it independently, with grace, intelligence, and remarkable courage and wit,” the actress praised affectionately.
Candice Bergen's Wish for Chloe to Arrive the Day After Louis Malle's Birthday
The celebrity mentioned that Chloe's initial due date was slated for late October, coinciding with her father's birthday on October 30, 1932. She recounted that the expected date passed in an excerpt from her 2016 autobiography, A Fine Romance, which was featured on CBS News.
“Whoever was inside, they were certainly active. [Chloe] somersaulted and moved vigorously. Then she positioned herself incorrectly, with her feet entangled in the umbilical cord, inverted and breech. This posed a significant danger of restricting oxygen and nutrient flow, and a risk of brain damage,” Bergen explained. “That moment marked the true beginning of our connection.”
“Before then, I had maintained a certain detachment, viewing the baby somewhat as an intruder into my established daily life. I had procrastinated on getting her room ready,” she went on. “Not anymore. It was completed, adorned with wallpaper featuring small pink rosebuds.”
