Chris Martin's Love Life: A Look Back at His Relationships Through the Years
From his union with Gwyneth Paltrow to his recent engagement to Dakota Johnson, Chris Martin's romantic life has frequently been in the news over the years.
The lead singer of Coldplay had a brief romance with Lily Sobhani before his introduction to Paltrow at a band concert in 2002. The couple quickly formed a bond and exchanged vows just one year later. After welcoming their daughter Apple in 2004 and son Moses in 2005, Martin and Paltrow announced their "conscious uncoupling" in March 2014.
"It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate," Martin and Paltrow stated on her Goop website, noting that they had been "working hard for well over a year" to make their relationship successful. "We have reached the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate. We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been."
Following their separation, Martin was linked to Jennifer Lawrence and Annabelle Wallis, before he began seeing Johnson in 2017. After almost seven years together, a source informed Us Weekly that the couple had secretly gotten engaged.

"Chris and Dakota have been engaged for a while now, but they’re not the type to make some huge public announcement because they try to keep their relationship as private as possible," the insider explained in March 2024. "They’re not in a huge rush to get married and don’t have a final wedding date set just yet."
Johnson and Martin reportedly ended their relationship permanently in June 2025.

Lily Sobhani
Martin dated the music events producer in the early 2000s, later admitting that the song "Warning Sign" from Coldplay's 2002 album A Rush of Blood to the Head addresses their breakup.
"The track is about breaking up with my girlfriend," he shared with the Irish Examiner in August 2022. "It was tough."
Gwyneth Paltrow
After meeting backstage at one of his Coldplay performances, Martin began a relationship with Paltrow. They married in December 2003 before welcoming their daughter Apple in May 2004 and son Moses in April 2006.
In March 2014, the pair announced their split — or "consciously uncoupling" — in a Goop blog post.

"We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate."
The statement continued, saying that Paltrow and Martin will "always" be a family and "in many ways" are closer than they had ever been since their breakup.
"We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time," they shared. "We have always conducted our relationship privately and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and co-parent, we will be able to continue in the same manner."
Martin and Paltrow finalized their divorce in April 2015, but have since maintained a strong friendship and coparenting relationship.
"It’s not quite [a] brother, but we are [a] complete family," Paltrow told Vanity Fair in a March 2025 interview. "He is there for me through anything, and vice versa. It feels much better when everybody can be together and people can let go of the more difficult, painful parts of what led to a divorce and focus on the things that led to the marriage in the first place. Once you fully let go of ‘We used to sleep in the same bed’ vibes, a world of possibility opens up."

In August 2014, Martin appeared to confirm his romance with Lawrence during a Coldplay concert when he reportedly made a Hunger Games reference and seemed to blow a kiss in the Oscar winner’s direction.
They briefly separated in October 2014 before reportedly reuniting after being seen on a dinner date that December. The couple then called it quits again in July 2015.
"Jen has been working nonstop and they never saw each other," a source told Us, noting that their relationship "ran its course."

Annabelle Wallis
Following his breakup with Lawrence, Martin was observed on a dinner date in New York with Wallis. They were photographed together on several occasions before seemingly parting ways sometime in 2017.
Dakota Johnson
Us confirmed that Martin began dating the actress in December 2017.
"Dakota and Chris are definitely dating," an insider shared. "They’ve gotten to know each other really well and are very comfortable [with] one another. Chris sends Dakota his music to get her opinion. It’s more than just a fling."
In September 2018, Johnson revealed in an interview with Tatler that she was "very happy" with Martin, without disclosing further details about their relationship.
Nearly two years later, Johnson directed the music video for Coldplay’s 2019 single "Cry Cry Cry."
"I wrote the story and pitched it to the band like every other director did, and they chose mine," Johnson told Marie Claire in May 2020. "Not because they’re partial to me at all."

After years of engagement speculation, a source confirmed to Us in March 2024 that the pair got engaged "a while" ago and had already started planning their wedding.
"They absolutely plan on having Apple and Moses there, and they wouldn’t feel complete without inviting Gwyneth too," a source said. "Dakota and Gwyneth have grown very close over the years and they consider themselves family at this point. One of the most important things to Chris is how beautifully Dakota fits into the lives of him and his children."
After almost eight years together, Martin and Johnson reportedly broke up in June 2025.
