Country Music Mourns Loss of Brett James After Tragic Plane Accident
A highly regarded country artist and composer, Brett James, tragically passed away in a plane accident in September 2025.
“Reaching 50 last year brought a moment of profound realization. I reflected on my extensive career crafting songs for other performers and felt a desire to reassess my path,” James recounted to Songwriter Universe in a 2020 discussion. “I hadn't released any personal musical works in approximately a quarter-century. … This inspired me to create music without focusing on categories or aiming for chart-topping singles. Understanding my most authentic vocal expression was my sole guiding principle.”
James characterized his extended play, I Am Now, as a collection of “Nashville soul music.”
“I naturally lean towards soul singing,” he explained to the publication. “I began composing and allowed my creative instincts to guide me. Taking a break from my professional songwriting duties, I penned roughly eleven tracks in just two weeks. I experienced more joy during that fortnight than in any other songwriting period of my life.”

What Was Brett James Known For?
Beyond his own recording and performing, James was credited with composing 26 tracks for other musicians, such as Kenny Chesney’s “When the Sun Goes Down,” Jason Aldean’s “The Truth,” and Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel.”
“It became profoundly meaningful for everyone involved, and I believe Carrie continues to hold it dear. Her impact on my life has been a true blessing over time,” he shared with The Tennessean in 2020, referencing Underwood’s Grammy-honored track. “When the ideal song finds the perfect vocalist, like Carrie’s, and is amplified by a powerful medium like radio, you suddenly possess something capable of subtly altering the world.”

James was previously wed to Sandra Cornelius. He then married Melody Carole Wilson in August 2021. “On August 21st, Brett and I tied the knot. How fortunate am I :)” Carole posted on Instagram in January 2022.

James and Cornelius had four children together—three boys and one girl—who served as the muse for his song “True Believer.”

I presented Brett with some roughly outlined verse concepts for 'I Hold On’ after my father passed away, and he simply worked his magic. The chorus is entirely his creation,” Bentley stated. “Whenever I perform that song, I invariably remember my father, but I also recall the day we composed it together. He instinctively understood it, and passionately embraced the idea.”
