Courtney Stodden Reveals Wedding Night Near Miss and Year One Struggles
On their wedding night, Courtney Stodden nearly had second thoughts about marrying Jared Safier.
“Year 1, down!” Stodden, 31, captioned a black and white photo from their nuptials via Instagram on Tuesday, December 2, in honor of the couple’s wedding anniversary. She disclosed, “Here’s the raw unfiltered truth: I almost ran away.”
The former Couples Therapy participant recounted, stating, “The evening of my wedding, Jared and I were both deeply moved, swamped, and too intoxicated to make sound choices with level heads. A miscommunication escalated into an argument, external influences exacerbated the situation, and everything deteriorated more rapidly than either of us intended.”
Stodden indicated that Safier, 42, departed amidst the disagreement, asserting it was “because he genuinely felt taking a break was the appropriate action.”

“Consequently, I spent our wedding night solitary in the bridal suite, enveloped in a quietude that resurrected every past hurt from my marriage at 16,” Stodden further elaborated. “The apprehension. The feeling of being deserted. The dread that history was recurring. It profoundly rattled me. I felt despair.”
Stodden, who achieved global recognition after marrying actor Doug Hutchison, then 51, at the age of 16 in 2011, clarified that she “did not flee” her union with Safier, notwithstanding her anxieties.
“And I am thankful that we returned with candor and a readiness to reconstruct. Because my affection for him is true. And I am certain his affection for me is reciprocal,” she penned. “This journey has not been simple for either of us. We entered matrimony burdened with childhood traumas, intricate familial complexities, and anticipations neither of us understood how to manage. We have been diligently working on reconstruction; re-establishing security, re-establishing intimacy … all while discovering our identities as husband and wife.”
Stodden remarked that she and Safier are “acquiring skills to converse, to love more effectively, and to select each other even through pain.”
“Perhaps love isn’t flawless, but truthful. Perhaps love isn’t the storybook fantasy. Perhaps it’s two imperfect individuals striving to be acknowledged, even following the most challenging inception,” she concluded. “Here’s to enduring the first year. Here’s to remaining when departing would have been simpler. And here’s to entering year two with hopefully greater tenderness, more elegance, and a love we both merit.”
Us Weekly was the sole outlet to confirm that Stodden and Safier exchanged vows in an impromptu ceremony on December 3, 2024. Only 20 attendees witnessed the couple's vows at Casa de Monte Vista in Palm Springs, California.
“Our intention was to marry, but a specific date eluded us. We simply glanced at one another, sharing a similar eccentric spirit. We looked at each other and mutually concluded, ‘This is the opportune moment to proceed,’” Stodden informed Us, disclosing that preparations for the wedding commenced three weeks earlier when she and Safier realized their respective families would be gathering for Thanksgiving.
“I am experiencing a sense of exhilaration. I perceive myself to be on a path towards my destined place,” Stodden added. “All occurrences leading up to this moment have guided me to this juncture.”

Before her union with Safier, Stodden had been married to Hutchison, 65, until 2018, when she initiated divorce proceedings against the actor known for The Green Mile. Their separation was finalized in 2020.
“I feared existing without a man who had persuaded me that I was incapable of living independently and would never rediscover love,” Stodden exclusively shared with Us post-divorce, alleging that Hutchison subjected her to emotional mistreatment during their entire relationship.
Hutchison’s representative, Charles Lago, addressed Stodden’s assertions in a unique statement provided to Us then, indicating that Hutchison intended to present his perspective in his 2020 autobiography, In Flushing Hollywood: Fake News, Fake Boobs.
“The initial portion of Doug’s book details the performers he collaborated with, while the latter part focuses on his encounter with Courtney,” Lago stated. “He proceeds to claim she devised various plots once Doug’s finances dwindled. Courtney, he asserts, never experienced a miscarriage, contending it was entirely fabricated, and none of their marital separations were genuine, attributing them all to Courtney’s orchestration. He entered the relationship with some capital, subsequently spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on her plastic surgeries. Upon the depletion of funds, Courtney reportedly initiated these deceitful schemes. This memoir, according to Lago, serves as his means of spiritual cleansing and seeking atonement. Courtney recently became aware of the book and, though not angered, expressed some astonishment.”
Stodden subsequently released a rebuttal to the aforementioned declaration.
“The reality is, I was 16 and lacked greater judgment when I wed him. At the time of our marriage, he possessed merely $50,000, which was used to settle his outstanding obligations,” she informed Us. “I assumed the role of main provider and was compelled to bear that burden since he was unable or unwilling to work. I was simply a young adolescent who felt accountable for this individual, who surpassed my father in age.”
