Craig Melvin Shares Powerful Message of Resilience with Sheinelle Jones After Husband's Passing
In a heartfelt display of support, Today show anchor Craig Melvin has been a source of immense encouragement for his close friend and former cohost, Sheinelle Jones, following the passing of her husband, Uche Ojeh, this past May.
The 46-year-old Melvin shared with Us Weekly an exclusive account of a profound conversation he shared with Jones, 48, just before her emotional return to the Today set on September 5.
“I conveyed to her several months ago, ‘You are stronger than you know. God does not burden us with more than we can handle; you will navigate this,’” Melvin recounted to Us. “Your presence back on air will convey a powerful message to our viewers and listeners: that while grief is a journey, forward movement is essential. They will witness in you an embodiment of resilience and perseverance.”
Jones recently elucidated her decision to maintain privacy surrounding her husband’s cancer struggle, which spanned from his November 2023 diagnosis until his passing, stating that her public career contrasted with Ojeh’s preference for a life outside the public eye.

“For a year and a half, she bore the weight of an entire world—managing her family, providing unwavering care for her husband, and, until recently, maintaining her demanding professional commitments,” Melvin elaborated. “Our roles are inherently rigorous, yet she managed it all, perhaps not fully grasping the immense fortitude it required until the ordeal concluded. This very conversation occurred just a short while ago. I’ve had the privilege of sharing more on-air time with her than with any other colleague in my career; we anchored Weekend Today and then the 3rd Hour side-by-side for over a decade.”
Melvin informed Us that he, Jones, and Ojeh maintained a close friendship. Notably, Ojeh took part in Melvin’s Bottoms Up Invitational golf tournament last year, an event now approaching its fourth iteration. Scheduled for Sunday, September 14, and Monday, September 15, the tournament serves as a poignant tribute to Melvin’s elder brother, Lawrence, who succumbed to colon cancer. Over its prior three editions, the event has successfully garnered more than $3 million for the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, an organization with which Melvin is deeply involved and vocally advocates.
“This initiative began in the wake of my older brother’s passing. He was 43 when he died from colorectal cancer, having received his diagnosis at just 39. A Baptist minister, a father of two, and an entrepreneur, his diagnosis was an utterly devastating blow,” Melvin explained. “During his lifetime, we embarked on significant advocacy efforts with the D.C.-based Colorectal Cancer Alliance, which stands as America’s foremost charity dedicated to eradicating colorectal cancer within our generation. Our collaboration felt inherently right.”
Melvin shared with Us that as Lawrence’s prognosis became grim, his brother passionately implored him to continue championing the cause.
“His final wish was for me to persist in this endeavor after his departure, a mandate I have honored. We leverage the influential platform of the Today show to elevate awareness and motivate individuals to undergo screenings, a commitment we’ve upheld for years,” Melvin stated. “It was a friend, Darius Rucker, who suggested several years ago, ‘You could likely generate substantial funds through a golf tournament paired with a concert.’”
Sheinelle Jones Overwhelmed with Emotion During 'Today' Comeback Following Husband Uche Ojeh’s Passing
Melvin noted that the tournament drew partial inspiration from the Monday After the Masters event, an occasion in which he and his wife, Lindsay Czarniak, have previously taken part.
“Opting not to re-engineer the concept, I reached out to a network of friends, enabling us to orchestrate a spectacular concert and secure approximately a million dollars in our inaugural year. To date, we've amassed around $3.2 million, with projections to add another million this year,” Melvin shared. “At this year's event, we will hear the compelling story of a man currently battling stage IV colorectal cancer, a father to a 5-year-old son, who is engaged in the fight of his life. The gathering unites survivors, patients, medical professionals, and caregivers—all converging for a meaningful celebration dedicated to this vital philanthropic endeavor.”
