D'Angelo's Son Michael Archer II Speaks Out for First Time Following Loss of Both Parents

Michael Archer II, son of music legend D’Angelo, has spoken out for the first time since the passing of his father and his mother, vocalist Angie Stone, within a seven-month period.

“I appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers during this incredibly challenging period, as this year has brought immense hardship and sorrow,” the 27-year-old Michael shared with People in a press release issued Tuesday, October 14.

“I kindly request that you keep me in your considerations going forward, as the path ahead will be arduous; however, a key lesson instilled in me by both my mother and father was resilience, and I fully intend to embody that strength,” Michael added.

On Tuesday, the celebrated soul artist D’Angelo passed away at a New York City medical facility following a private struggle with pancreatic cancer. The artist known for “Lady” was Michael's father with Stone, who herself succumbed to a car crash in Montgomery, Alabama, at 63 years old this past March. (D’Angelo is additionally survived by one other son and a daughter.)

“Our family's guiding light has faded from our presence in this existence,” D’Angelo’s relatives conveyed in a release to Us Weekly on Tuesday. “Following an extended and valiant fight against cancer, we are devastated to inform everyone that Michael D’Angelo Archer, globally recognized by his admirers as D’Angelo, has been summoned home, leaving this world today, October 14th, 2025.”

The announcement further stated, “While we grieve that he can now only share cherished recollections with his loved ones, we are perpetually thankful for the heritage of exceptionally powerful music he bequeaths. We request your respect for our privacy during this sorrowful period, yet we invite you all to join us in commemorating his departure while simultaneously honoring the musical talent he bestowed upon the globe.”

RCA, the record company representing the “Brown Sugar” vocalist, also offered their respects.

“We are profoundly grieved by D’Angelo's demise. He was an unmatched innovator who seamlessly integrated the traditional rhythms of soul, funk, gospel, R&B, and jazz with a modern hip-hop flair,” the label conveyed in a communiqué to Us. “Recognized as a meticulous artist, D’Angelo put out three records that were broadly lauded as seminal works by both fellow musicians and his devoted global fanbase. He received numerous accolades and widespread critical praise for his gifts.”

The son of the late star previously expressed his grief over his mother's passing through a heartfelt message shared on Instagram in March.

“Hello mother, I didn't need anything, just wanted to tell you I love you ……. I know you're up there relishing your divine form,” Michael posted. “I hope you managed to visit grandma and granddaddy …….I want you to know how immensely proud I am of the individual you are…. I want you to understand the profound daily inspiration you provided me …… you never let me down, not once….you were never a hardship for me, NEVER … if given the chance to relive it all, I would alter nothing.”

He continued, “I am so thankful for the wisdom you imparted, and I aspire to be as wonderful a parent to my future children as you were to me…..I simply wanted you to know that I will manage from here, I will be alright… and I will ETERNALLY HONOR YOUR MEMORY love you mama.”
