Danielle Jonas Opens Up About Her Private Battle with Lyme Disease

Kevin Jonas’ wife, Danielle Jonas, is offering details about her private struggle with Lyme Disease.

In an interview with Parents that was released on Thursday, October 9, Danielle, 39, shared that she first noticed her hair loss and initially received no diagnosis from medical professionals.

“They attempted to convince me it was stress. Eventually, a biopsy confirmed that I actually had Lyme disease,” she stated. “I also experienced eczema on my scalp, likely due to the inflammation [caused by Lyme disease]. The loss of my hair was deeply upsetting. It reached a point where I considered wearing a wig.”

However, Danielle opted for extensions — which unfortunately exacerbated her eczema. “I needed to attend events and engagements with Kevin. I simply wanted to feel like myself,” she explained.

Lyme disease is spread by ticks and can manifest with symptoms such as a distinctive bull’s-eye rash, fever, chills, tiredness, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes, according to the Mayo Clinic. If left untreated, the condition can also lead to severe joint pain and neurological complications.

After thoroughly examining the products she used on her skin, Danielle switched to all® free clear — a brand endorsed by the National Eczema Association — and has since observed an improvement. Following this change, Danielle reported that her symptoms are more manageable, though not entirely resolved, as she still experiences eczema flare-ups.

This ordeal ultimately impressed upon Danielle the significance of fostering self-assurance in her children. (Danielle and Kevin, 37, are parents to daughters Alena, 11, and Valentina, 8.)

“They witnessed everything I went through, so the primary message I give them [when their eczema flares up] is ‘This will get better,’” Danielle revealed.

As her daughters experiment with various skincare items, Danielle advises them to choose those made with pure ingredients.

“I had to somewhat restrain Alena. Beyond eczema, she has always had other skin sensitivities, so maintaining a clean regimen for her is crucial,” Danielle commented. “Still, she gets frustrated because she wants to enjoy using certain products. I simply tell her, ‘Well, do you prefer a flare-up or do you want to keep it under control?’ That helps her calm down.”

In July 2024, Kevin spoke openly about Danielle’s health while providing an update on whether the couple was considering expanding their family.

“If it’s meant to be, we’ll see,” Kevin shared during an episode of “The Viall Files” podcast. “It’s, like, we prioritized some health time for my wife. She has Lyme disease, so she really wanted to get that sorted. She’s only now starting to recover, in a positive way, which is wonderful. Like all things, it just requires time and figuring out your life. But we&re definitely not ruling it out.”

Should the couple decide to welcome a third child, Kevin speculated that it would feel “like a firstborn all over again” given that his daughters are older now.

“My oldest daughter came downstairs this morning with a cold ice roller on her face while preparing her own breakfast. I mean, she’s 10,” Kevin joked about Alena. “She came down dressed, made herself breakfast, was getting ready for camp, and rolling her face, like, my life is fantastic right now. I’ll embrace it. Do I want to be changing diapers? Perhaps not, but at the same time, I adore babies and I love having children, so why not? Let’s do it.”
