Denny Hamlin's Father Dies in House Fire, Mother Hospitalized
NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin has released a statement following the death of his father, Dennis Hamlin, in a house fire.
“I am grateful to everyone who has offered condolences regarding my father’s passing,” Denny, 45, wrote on X on Wednesday, December 31. “My mother is continuing to recover, and our family deeply appreciates the overwhelming support and the respect for our privacy during this difficult time.”
The Gaston County Office of Emergency Management and Fire Services confirmed on Monday, December 29 — according to WSOC-TV — that Dennis, 75, died as a result of a fire at their North Carolina home. Denny’s mother, Mary Lou, remains hospitalized. Her injuries were initially described by officials as “potentially life-threatening.”
Dennis and Mary Lou, 69, were both transported to a local medical facility with “severe injuries.” Us Weekly reached out to Gaston County EMS for a comment at the time.

The fire started on Sunday, with emergency services receiving a call around 6:20 p.m. ET. It took approximately two hours for firefighters to extinguish the blaze once they arrived on the scene. “I was shocked and saddened for them last night,” a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous told WSOC. “It was heartbreaking to witness firsthand.”
Another neighbor of the family, Brett Hager, told WSOC, “Our driveway was crowded with volunteer firefighters and vehicles, and our yards were lined with emergency personnel. The responders who came to assist did a commendable job.”
When first responders arrived, 40 to 45 percent of the Hamlin’s home was already engulfed in flames, Lucia Riverbend Fire Department’s David Toomey told The Athletic. Toomey explained that 10 to 12 fire crews collaborated to combat the fire, as the heavily wooded area surrounding the home lacked fire hydrants. All of the water had to be transported in by tanker trucks.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. An investigation is currently underway.
NASCAR’s Denny Hamlin Visibly Emotional Discussing Ailing Father During Courtroom Testimony
Months prior to the fire, Denny had been open about the health struggles of his father, who had been diagnosed with an undisclosed terminal illness. (The family chose not to disclose the specifics of the health condition.)
“I am certain this is my final opportunity for my dad to see this happen,” Denny told the Associated Press in October. “I don’t want him to miss out on this moment.”
After securing a victory at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in September, Denny recalled a conversation he had with his father.
“He was incredibly happy and he consistently tells me I’m the best, regardless of whether I win or lose, he always says I’m the best,” Denny said. “He’s a very enthusiastic supporter and I spent time in his garage, talking with him. He has all my old racing memorabilia and it’s wonderful to reminisce. He enjoys looking back on the past and right now I am truly cherishing the hours I have with them each week.”
Denny continued, “He’s the one who introduced me to racing. He took me to a racetrack when I was 5 and then made significant financial sacrifices to support my career. They sold many of their possessions. We came close to losing our home on a couple of occasions. They did everything they could to keep it all going.”
