Diane Keaton a Legendary Star and Fashion Icon Dies at 79
The iconic Diane Keaton, a true cinematic legend, has passed away at the age of 79.
Her family's representative confirmed to People that Keaton's passing occurred in California on Saturday, October 11. The publication noted that no further details regarding the esteemed actress’ demise have been released, with her loved ones requesting discretion during this difficult period.
Us Weekly has sought commentary from Keaton’s representatives.
A star celebrated for her indelible performances, she graced films such as The Godfather, the fashion-defining Annie Hall, the beloved Father of the Bride series, and the more recent Book Club installments.
Diane Keaton's Most Memorable Roles: 'The Godfather' and More
“I consistently felt like the most unconventional, peculiar character in the film, questioning my casting and feeling unheard,” she said of her Godfather role at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival. She continued, “I recently re-watched it on my computer, having not seen it in roughly three decades. The memory of everyone involved overwhelmed me; it was utterly astounding, exquisitely crafted, with superb performances from the entire cast, magnificent music, and impeccable directorial decisions by [Francis Ford Coppola].”
Keaton later solidified her status as a prominent figure in romantic and comedic cinema, confiding in Us Weekly in 2022 about her recent enthusiasm for more physically demanding roles.
“I had the opportunity to engage in some physical comedy, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and it sparked a desire to undertake more active roles in films, rather than remaining sedentary,” she shared exclusively with Us regarding her involvement in Mack & Rita. “Truly. It’s been quite a while since I had such an opportunity. I aspire to do more of that kind of work. One can only hope a similar project materializes.”
She further elaborated, “I’ve never portrayed anything quite so utterly ridiculous [as this character]. It resonates with my innate disposition. Embodying a bit of a ‘dingbat’ is where I feel most comfortable. That’s precisely why I’m eager for another film that allows me to explore that further. Though, it’s likely a long shot.”

During the same conversation, Keaton also discussed with Us the conditions necessary for a potential sequel to Father of the Bride, featuring her esteemed costars Steve Martin, Martin Short, Kimberly Williams Paisley, and Kieran Culkin.
“No one has presented such a project. However, should the opportunity arise, absolutely. I would, without hesitation,” Keaton revealed to Us in 2022. “Steven, Marty — they now have their brilliant television series [Only Murders in the Building]. They are veritable titans, profoundly talented actors, humorous, intelligent, and all-around exceptional. We are all aware of their prowess, and their dynamic truly functions. Their achievements on television are quite extraordinary.”
Beyond her extensive acting oeuvre, Keaton also presided over home decor and eyewear enterprises, penned several books, and unveiled a festive single named “First Christmas” in 2024.

Keaton leaves behind her two beloved children, Dexter and Duke, whom she embraced through adoption in her fifties.
“I never envisioned myself truly ready for motherhood,” she shared with Ladie’s Home Journal in 2008. “Becoming a mother wasn't an irresistible impulse; rather, it was a concept I had contemplated for an extended period. Thus, I made the commitment.”
Over the years, Keaton’s daughter, Dexter, has often honored her mother on social media.
“My mom and I have always cherished embarking on adventures side-by-side. Whether it’s leisurely beach walks or exploring an unfamiliar area,” she wrote in a June 2023 homage. “I adore the moments I share with my mother. Our time together is consistently wonderful. I love my mom.”
