Diane Keaton's Health Deteriorated Abruptly Before Her Death

Reports indicate that screen icon Diane Keaton experienced significant health challenges in the period leading up to her passing at 79 years old.

On Saturday, October 11, Keaton’s representative confirmed the actress’s death at 79, providing no additional specifics. Her loved ones “requested privacy” while mourning their profound bereavement.

Us Weekly contacted Keaton’s spokespeople seeking a statement regarding her demise.

According to a close associate who spoke to People, the health of the Annie Hall luminary “deteriorated quite abruptly” in her final months, prompting her retreat from public engagements. Though Keaton had been a regular presence in her Brentwood, California, community — often seen on her daily strolls with her dog Reggie — her friend noted her unexpected disappearance from public view earlier in the year.

It is understood that Keaton opted to withhold the specifics of her medical condition from many acquaintances, preferring to be accompanied solely by “her most intimate family members.” She was a devoted parent to two children: Dexter, her daughter, and Duke, her son, both adopted during their infancy.

During March, reports surfaced that Keaton had listed her 1920s-era Sullivan Canyon residence for sale and had even reduced the asking price by $1.4 million, seemingly aiming for a swift transaction. This revelation was especially surprising given that Keaton had virtually reconstructed the entire estate.

In her 2017 interior design book, The House That Pinterest Built, she guided readers through her painstaking multi-year renovation, explaining how the utilization of Pinterest boards contributed to enhancing the value of the 9,200 square-foot property. (Keaton acquired the Sullivan Canyon property for $4.7 million in 2011, prior to listing it for $27.5 million earlier this year.)

In an interview with Architectural Digest in 2017, Keaton shared how “calming” she found it to draw upon various design inspirations from Pinterest during her home’s renovation.

“I remain captivated by it; I remain captivated by Pinterest!” she joyfully declared. “For me, it offers solace, because you’re perpetually searching. One discovery leads to another, and that leads to yet another, in an endless progression. And that is the illumination you desire — the glow from the screen. It simply enhances everything’s appearance.”

Beyond Pinterest, Keaton drew unexpected design motivation for her remodeling project from the timeless children’s story, The Three Little Pigs.

“[The pigs’ dwelling] was constructed from bricks,” she penned in The House That Pinterest Built. “I always envisioned living in a brick house once I became an adult.”

The Oscar-winning performer is survived by her daughter, Dexter, and son, Duke, both of whom she adopted in her fifties. She never entered matrimony, despite having notable relationships with fellow actors Woody Allen, Al Pacino, and Warren Beatty throughout the 1970s.

Numerous colleagues, friends, and celebrated admirers of Keaton shared heartfelt eulogies after the stunning announcement of the Hollywood icon’s passing.

“My heart is heavy with this news,” expressed Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Keaton’s costar from Father of the Bride. “Collaborating with Diane Keaton will forever stand as a paramount experience in my life. I am grateful for your compassion, your magnanimity, your artistry, and most profoundly, your humor.”

Josh Gad characterized Keaton’s passing as a “colossal void” for the film industry, elaborating: “In numerous aspects, Diane Keaton shaped my passion for cinema. Spanning from Annie Hall to the Godfather series, from First Wives Club to Baby Boom, from Father of the Bride to Something’s Gotta Give, her filmography was truly legendary and deserving of enshrinement.”

The voice actor from Frozen alluded to other recent departures of cinematic giants, conceding that there are simply “no substitutes for a Gene Hackman or a Robert Redford or a Diane Keaton.”

“These were the pioneers who assisted in reimagining filmmaking for an entire era, and their absence feels like a missed connection to that unattainable golden age,” Gad concluded. “My deepest sympathies extend to Diane’s whole family during this incredibly difficult time. Rest in peace.”
