Diddy Adapts to Prison Life: A Look Inside Fort Dix and His New Routine

It's often said that a single image can convey a narrative. On November 7, TMZ shared an image of Sean “Diddy” Combs at the Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution in New Jersey. The photographs, captured on October 31, show the embattled music icon appearing remarkably calm: Clad in a gray tracksuit, a coordinating beanie (and beard), a blue jacket, and black athletic shoes, he was seen smiling and interacting with a group of six other men in the prison's outdoor area.

Combs received a 50-month prison sentence in early October after his July conviction for two charges related to transporting individuals for prostitution. (He was cleared of the graver accusations of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy after an eight-week trial, during which his former girlfriend Cassie Ventura and a witness identified as Jane alleged they were compelled to engage in multi-day, drug-fueled “freak offs.”)

The 56-year-old rapper was moved from Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center to Fort Dix — a low-security institution accommodating approximately 4,000 inmates — on October 30. Combs, whose net worth is still estimated at $400 million and who possesses residences in Miami, L.A., and NYC, now resides in dormitory-style quarters alongside nine other individuals. Furthermore, he has already begun working: his representative, Juda Engelmayer, informed Us Weekly on November 11 that Combs is presently assigned to the chapel library.

Though his current accommodations might be an improvement over the infamously perilous MDC (where he had been held since his September 2024 apprehension), they are a stark contrast to his luxurious life before incarceration. “An individual might be influential or wealthy outside,” states Bill Baroni, a Seton Hall Law School professor who spent three months confined, “but within prison, all individuals are treated equally.”

Combs has experienced a rather busy period in recent weeks. He seems to be forming connections — the TMZ images depict him conversing with former NBA player Sebastian Telfair (imprisoned for a probation violation stemming from a healthcare fraud conviction), and reports indicate that some of his new acquaintances baked him a cake using items purchased from the prison commissary for his November 4 birthday. “He has encountered pleasant individuals,” Engelmayer informs Us. “People have shown him kindness.”

Combs was admitted into a residential drug abuse program (RDAP). This initiative — which can be challenging to gain entry to, particularly at such an early stage — has the potential to shorten his sentence by as much as a year. Participants in RDAP live in a dedicated section separate from the main prison population and dedicate part of their day to therapeutic sessions. (His sentencing required Combs to engage in both mental health and substance abuse programs.)

An Overview of Diddy’s Legal Issues and Allegations: A Chronology

His new role within the chapel library is viewed as a highly desirable assignment. “He perceives it as both reassuring and fulfilling, and it allows him to assist fellow inmates with their literacy [and] various requirements,” Engelmayer informs Us. Notwithstanding claims that Combs will serve as the chaplain’s assistant, Engelmayer asserts that “everyone offers support to the chaplain,” specifying, “there is no defined role.”

Combs is also set to return to teaching. During his time at MDC, the magnate led a six-week entrepreneurship workshop titled Free Game With Diddy. (A Bureau of Prisons work performance record, shared with Us on November 11, included a glowing evaluation from a unit manager for the class, stating: “Outstanding class. Continue the excellent effort!”) Engelmayer reveals to Us that the rapper intends to deliver the course once more at Fort Dix. “He is just commencing it now,” Engelmayer notes, adding that the curriculum will be “identical or highly comparable.” Official documents indicate the course's objective is to “furnish attendees with crucial competencies in business administration, entrepreneurial ventures, and individual growth.” The course outline includes modules such as “Accomplished Individuals Undertake Actions Unsuccessful Individuals Avoid,” “Opportunity Waits for No One,” and an extra session dubbed “Cannot Be Stopped Will Not Be Stopped” — a reference to the popular 1998 track he appeared on.

His experience hasn't been without its difficulties. On November 7, TMZ alleged that Combs was discovered producing and drinking alcoholic beverages. Engelmayer dismissed these accusations as “entirely untrue.” Three days afterward, CBS News reported that the Grammy recipient breached prison regulations by engaging in a three-way phone call on November 3. Combs reportedly informed prison authorities that he was discussing with his legal counsel the release of a statement to The New York Times; it was suggested he forfeit 90 days of phone and commissary access.

“[The communication] was not started by Sean,” Engelmayer explained to Us. “His attorneys initiated it. It fell under attorney-client privilege.” He states he has received no information about Combs losing privileges — “Our continued communication with him indicates he has not forfeited any”— however, on November 12, the rapper’s anticipated release date was postponed by one month, shifting from May 8, 2028, to June 4, 2028. The rationale for this adjustment remained undisclosed at the time of publication.

While he remains a topic of news outside, Combs is adapting to his daily routine. Inmates are roused at 6 a.m. for their morning meal (oatmeal or bran flakes), then attend educational sessions or perform duties before lunch (baked fish and rice pilaf) at
1 p.m. The evening meal (pasta with meatballs or chili) is served at 5 p.m., succeeded by several hours of leisure. Prisoners are required to be at their bedsides daily at 9 p.m. for a conclusive count and must return to their sleeping quarters by 11 p.m.

Tyler King, a former Fort Dix prisoner and founder of the prison reform group A Voice From Prison, states that “days are organized, yet lack true purpose. While there are educational courses, reading materials, and restricted activities, it isn't the rehabilitative setting the public envisions,” King further explains, mentioning that tablets (purchased by inmates) have recently been introduced.

Tedium proves draining. “Hours are passed watching televisions, walking restlessly, or fixated on illicit cell phones. Physical exercise and reading serve as crucial supports,” King observes. Baroni informs Us that the most challenging aspect of federal prison life is “the sluggish passage of time.” Engelmayer states the rapper largely keeps to himself. “[Combs] mentioned he walks and communes with God during his strolls.”

Previous detainees suggest the hip-hop star's fame will offer limited advantages. The Real Housewives of New Jersey veteran Joe Giudice, who served 41 months at Fort Dix for fraud before his 2019 discharge, tells Us that Combs’ experience “hinges on his demeanor. Provided he maintains a discreet presence and avoids grandstanding, he will be okay.” Giudice witnessed acts of aggression over trivial matters during his incarceration. “I observed individuals being assaulted over an onion. You're not confined with the most emotionally balanced individuals.”

He also saw collective sexual activity in the pre-dawn hours. “I would awaken around three or four in the morning to use the restroom and would encounter the most bizarre scenes, individuals you would never conceive of,” he recounts. “[The correctional officers] detect the showers running overnight, and they simply disregard it.”

Another former prisoner who was held at Fort Dix for 17 months between 2019 and 2020 describes the living environment as highly unsatisfactory. “There's a single lavatory per floor equipped with toilets and showers, and everything is in disrepair. A significant portion of the provisions is past its expiration date. It's dreadful. They are indifferent,” he conveys to Us. “I had been there for a day and a half, and I [remarked to a] young man [I had just encountered], ‘This isn't a correctional facility, it's a mental institution!’ and he concurred. It was chaotic.”

Baroni offers a more optimistic perspective: “Diddy’s existence will be considerably less challenging in his current location. He is transitioning from one of the nation's most stringent correctional facilities to a low-security [one].” Giudice further notes that Combs will have the capacity to fund premium amenities, such as shoe shining and even personal protection. “You can have your attire custom-fitted and culinary experts prepare your meals. That's simply the reality.”

Visitations are “revered and rigorously supervised,” King states. “You receive a single embrace at the beginning and one at the conclusion. All interactions in between must be appropriate — an excessively prolonged handhold will terminate your visit.” Combs’ relatives have continued to support him, although Engelmayer is uncertain if the magnate’s seven children have visited him at Fort Dix yet. (He is the father of Quincy, 34, Justin, 31, King, 27, Chance, 19, and the twin sisters D’Lila and Jessie, 18, as well as Love, 2.) “We cherish you. We long for you,” Quincy wrote in a birthday caption on November 4. “Wishing the greatest father a happy birthdayyy,” D’Lila and Jessie posted on Instagram.

Festive periods can be especially demanding — and uncertain. “A celebratory meal could materialize — or it might not,” King notes. “In certain years, visiting hours are permitted; in others, facility lockdowns and inspections revoke that entitlement. The most difficult aspect is realizing your family convenes in your absence. It serves as a reminder that life continues its progression, even as your own remains static.” (This year’s Thanksgiving midday meal menu proposes cold cuts or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches; Christmas midday meal features a roasted Cornish hen, mashed potatoes, and fruit or a seasonal confection.)

Considering his release date of June 4, 2028, which accounts for the 13 months served at MDC and possible reductions for exemplary conduct, Combs faces a significant duration of incarceration. “Under the most favorable circumstances, [he will serve] 22 to 24 months [less] up to 6 months in a transitional facility,” attorney Scott Rosenblum informs Us. On November 3, a U.S. Circuit Court judge approved Combs’ accelerated appeal (oral arguments are scheduled for April 2026). “Diddy benefits from an exceptional appellate legal team,” a source reveals to Us. “He is expertly represented.”

Subsequent to Combs’ October 3 sentencing, those affected conveyed satisfaction that he did not evade imprisonment with merely time already spent. “Although no action can erase the harm inflicted by Combs, the penalty issued today acknowledges the ramifications of the severe crimes he perpetrated,” Ventura’s legal representative Douglas Wigdor communicated to Us. Dawn Richard’s lawyer, Arick Fudali, who represents the ex-Danity Kane vocalist in her civil action against Combs, informed CNN he commended “the magistrate’s emphasis on the victims and the profound damage Mr. Combs inflicted upon their existences.”

In a communication submitted before sentencing to Judge Arun Subramanian, Combs had pledged to maximize his time in detention. “I am embarking on a path that will demand patience and diligence,” he penned. “I am pleased to report I am exerting more effort than ever prior. I am dedicated to the process of staying free from drugs, non-aggressive, and a serene individual.” Engelmayer informs Us that Combs maintains his focus on rehabilitation: “His objective is to rejoin his family at the earliest opportunity and to optimally utilize his confinement, emerging as his most exemplary self.”
