Diddy's Team Slams 50 Cent's Netflix Doc as Smear Campaign

A representative for Sean “Diddy” Combs has publicly criticized 50 Cent’s forthcoming Netflix documentary, titled Sean Combs: The Reckoning.

“The program Netflix is presenting as a ‘documentary’ is nothing more than a disgraceful smear campaign,” a representative for the embattled musician declared in comments made to Us Weekly on Monday, December 1. “The preview shown on GMA today verifies that Netflix utilized unauthorized, pilfered material. As both Netflix and its CEO, Ted Sarandos, are aware, Mr. Combs has been collecting personal recordings since his teenage years with the intention of narrating his own experiences authentically. It is both inherently unjust and unlawful for Netflix to misuse this intellectual property.”

The official communication further asserted, “Netflix is evidently eager to sensationalize every aspect of Mr. Combs’s existence, disregarding factual accuracy, solely to exploit an incessant media uproar. Had Netflix any concern for honesty or Mr. Combs’s legal entitlements, it would not be extracting private recordings out of context – including privileged discussions with his attorneys that were never meant for public disclosure. Ownership rights to that content were never ceded to Netflix or any other entity.”

The communique deemed it “just as astonishing” that the streaming service “assigned directorial authority” to 50 Cent, whom they described as “a persistent opponent harboring a personal grudge, who has dedicated considerable effort to defaming Mr. Combs.” (50 Cent and Diddy have been engaged in a widely publicized rivalry dating back to the early 2000s.)

“Beyond the legal ramifications, this constitutes a profound betrayal of trust,” the statement concluded. “Mr. Combs has consistently held Ted Sarandos in high esteem and revered the contributions of Clarence Avant. For Netflix to entrust his life narrative to an individual who has openly assailed him for many years feels like an uncalled-for and profoundly personal insult. He anticipated, at the very least, equitable treatment from those he held in regard.”

Subsequently, Diddy’s attorneys issued a formal cease and desist order to Netflix.

Although the official statement was released just one day prior to the debut of The Reckoning, Netflix had already unveiled a preview for the documentary, featuring Diddy on a phone conversation less than a week before his apprehension in 2024. (Diddy was taken into custody in September 2024, facing accusations of sex trafficking, racketeering, and facilitating prostitution. He entered a not guilty plea and has consistently refuted all accusations.)

During this call, he utters, “We must locate an associate experienced in the most unsavory of industries. We are currently at a disadvantage.”

Upon Variety’s inquiry to Netflix regarding the purportedly misappropriated recordings, a spokesperson referred the publication to a comment made by the documentary’s director, Alexandria Stapleton.

Netflix Is Set to Release a Startling New Diddy Documentary This December

“The material came into our possession; we acquired it lawfully and possess the requisite permissions,” she stated. “We exerted every effort to safeguard the anonymity of the filmmaker. A notable characteristic of Sean Combs is his consistent self-documentation, an enduring preoccupation over many decades. Furthermore, we contacted Sean Combs’ legal representatives on several occasions for an interview and statement, but received no reply.”

In May, Diddy received a guilty verdict on two charges related to transportation, yet was cleared of the remaining accusations. By October, he received a sentence of 50 months behind bars and five years under supervisory release.

Sean Combs: The Reckoning is scheduled to debut on Netflix on Tuesday, December 2.
