Dolly Parton's Late Husband Carl Dean's Will Reveals Thoughtful Estate Plans for the Country Queen

It has been exclusively revealed by Us Weekly that Dolly Parton’s deceased husband, Carl Dean, had prepared a last will and testament well in advance of his passing, detailing both the inheritance designated for the acclaimed country singer and the arrangements for their assets should she have predeceased him.

Following Dean’s passing on March 3 at 82 years old, Us gained access to legal paperwork submitted by Parton, who is 79. The music icon informed the judiciary that Dean had formalized his will on January 16, 2013, and it remained unchanged thereafter.

Parton declared herself his surviving spouse, noting they did not have any offspring. The entirety of his inheritance is directed to the Carl Thomas Dean Trust, with Parton appointed as its trustee.

According to the submitted documents, Dean possessed no real estate within Tennessee, though he did hold personal belongings and monetary assets. Parton confirmed that her departed spouse neither owned nor exerted significant influence over any active commercial ventures or financial entities that would factor into his estate.

Parton formally requested that the court designate her as the administrator for Dean’s estate.

Within his last testament, Dean acknowledged his five nieces and nephews, as well as Parton’s fourteen. He stipulated that should Parton be unable to fulfill the role of executor, his niece was named as her successor.

Dean indicated his intention to provide a handwritten memorandum specifying the recipients of his personal items and household goods. In the event this list was not located, he assigned Parton the duty of distributing the property.

He specified that Parton was granted full ownership and claim to all personal items associated with her music and entertainment profession, encompassing, but not limited to, photographs, stage attire, adornments, musical devices, and apparatus.

Had the renowned vocalist died prior to him, Dean specified that these particular items would be disseminated through his trust.

Furthermore, he stated that Parton would inherit all rights to furniture, artwork, vehicles, and various other possessions. Dean clarified that if the celebrated artist had passed away before him, these belongings would be divided equitably among his and Parton’s nieces and nephews.

As Us had previously disclosed, Parton publicly shared the news of Dean’s demise on March 3 via her social media channels.

She expressed, “Carl and I enjoyed countless cherished years side-by-side. The affection we shared for more than six decades is beyond words. I am grateful for your thoughts and condolences.”

The online announcement further stated, “His interment will be a private affair, attended solely by close family members. He is survived by his sister, Sandra, and brother, Donnie.”

Parton’s first encounter with Dean occurred when he was twenty-one and she was eighteen. They were casually spending time outside a self-service laundry facility. Their marriage followed two years subsequent to this meeting.

“We are an ideal pair,” Parton shared. “Both of us possess a strong sense of humor. … We can navigate any issue or circumstance by making light of it and preventing it from becoming overly serious, all while maintaining mutual respect and fondness. You could say we got fortunate.”

Dean, known for his intensely private nature, issued a public comment regarding Parton on the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary in 2016.

“My initial reaction was, ‘I’m going to wed that young lady,’” Dean recalled. “My subsequent thought was, ‘Goodness, she is attractive.’ And from that moment, my existence truly started. I would not exchange the preceding half-century for anything in this world.”
