Eddie Murphy's Private World Revealed in New Documentary 'Being Eddie'

Eddie Murphy has firmly established his legacy in Hollywood not only as an acclaimed comedian, multi-talented actor, and singer, but preeminently as a devoted father to his ten children.

The preview released on Wednesday, October 22, for his forthcoming documentary, Being Eddie, offers a rare peek into Murphy's, 64, life at his stunning residence, shared with his extensive blended family, revealing intimate aspects of his private world.

The initial moments of the trailer present an overhead perspective of Murphy's dwelling, which he shares with his spouse, Paige Butcher. Butcher, 46, makes an appearance in the backdrop of a sequence shot in the kitchen and dining space, as Murphy gathers with his loved ones for a meal.

“He transformed from the edgy entertainer into the quintessential family man,” remarks Tracee Ellis Ross in a separate segment, highlighting Murphy’s commitment to exemplary fatherhood.

Eddie's children include his oldest son Eric, 36, with ex Paulette McNeely; daughters Bria, 35, Shayne, 31, Zola, 25, and Bella, 23, alongside son Myles, 32, from his former marriage to Nicole Mitchell Murphy; son Christian, 34, with ex-girlfriend Tamara Hood; daughter Angel, 18, with ex-girlfriend Mel B; and daughter Izzy, 9, and son Max, 6, with Butcher.

Prior to the production of this documentary, Eddie had frequently expressed his joy about fatherhood and spoken highly of his offspring.

“I feel incredibly fortunate with my children,” he revealed during an appearance on Marc Maron‘s “WTF” podcast in March 2021. “I haven't encountered a single troublesome child. There isn't one who makes me think, ‘Oh, you're the problem.’ None of that exists. My kids are wonderful, well-adjusted individuals — and not one of them resembles the typical entitled Hollywood offspring.”

He further elaborated, “My children are intelligent and ambitious. I am truly blessed by them. I genuinely, genuinely consider myself fortunate.”

Admirers of the versatile star will witness the father of ten in his element within Being Eddie, a film that “documents the exceptional journey and enduring impact of this groundbreaking artist through never-before-seen interviews with Murphy and his fellow comedians, providing a deeply personal look at this unparalleled talent,” according to the official description.

An additional segment features Eddie relaxing on his sofa, engrossed in television, where he asserts, “The premier program on TV is Ridiculousness.” Pete Davidson, who contributed insights to the documentary, humorously remarked, “I find it amusing that he's just chilling, watching Ridiculousness. That's genuinely hilarious.”

The formal summary also hints at Eddie’s formative career years, highlighting moments such as performing with Jerry Seinfeld at the age of 17 and his transition to Saturday Night Live directly after graduating high school.

“No performer has portrayed a police officer, a physician, and a donkey — all while excelling in every dimension of Hollywood he's engaged with,” the synopsis proclaims. “Even fewer have sustained A-list status for more than forty years without yielding to its more perilous aspects. Murphy’s distinctive blend of potent magnetism, unwavering drive, innate ability, and profound discretion sets him apart, all of which are thoroughly showcased in Being Eddie, helmed by two-time Oscar® recipient Angus Wall.”

The summary further explains, “The film unites comedic and cinematic icons such as Dave Chappelle, Tracee Ellis Ross, Jamie Foxx, Jerry Seinfeld, Reginald Hudlin, and others to honor the Oscar®-nominated actor and his almost five-decade career, a period during which he has shattered conventions, pioneered new styles, and motivated countless artists. Unprecedentedly, Murphy welcomes viewers into his private residence to reflect on his extraordinary portfolio of work, simultaneously unveiling the vibrant inner world that has both propelled — and anchored — this truly exceptional star.”

Being Eddie is slated for streaming release on Netflix on November 12.
