Emma Heming Willis Finds Joy Amidst Bruce's Dementia Battle
Emma Heming Willis is cherishing moments with her husband, Bruce Willis, and their children as he navigates his battle with frontotemporal dementia.
"While the grief, sorrow, and emotional pain are a constant presence, I've come to understand that it's permissible for me to also find joy in our lives," Heming Willis, 49, shared with People in an interview published on Wednesday, September 3. "Bruce would desire that for both me and our children, not to dwell in sadness, but to rise above it."
Willis, 70, currently resides in a secondary home, separate from the property where Heming Willis lives with their two daughters, Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11. She openly discussed her regular visits to her husband's home with their kids during ABC’s Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey – A Diane Sawyer Special, which aired on August 26.
“We spend a lot of time there,” Heming Willis conveyed to host Diane Sawyer. “It functions as our second residence, so the girls have their personal belongings there. It is a dwelling filled with love, warmth, care, and laughter, and it has been wonderful to witness that—to see how many of Bruce’s friends continue to be present for him, bringing vitality and amusement.”
The Rationale Behind Emma Heming Willis' Decision to Move Bruce to a Second Residence with a Care Team
Heming Willis, who married the acclaimed actor in 2009, provided further details about the living arrangement and the choice to transition her husband into a different home in a recent podcast discussion.
“Occasionally, it necessitates assessing your living environment,” she explained on Tuesday, September 2. “You must consider if it’s a safe place for someone to reside. Is it safe for me, and is it safe for our children? It is an extremely personal judgment, but it ultimately hinges on safety. It comes down to making the appropriate decision for yourself, your family, and your loved one.”
Despite their separate living arrangements, Heming Willis sometimes offers glimpses into her life with her and Willis’ daughters through posts on Instagram.
“The Getty gifted us with art, magnificent gardens, sunshine, and the ideal spot for a picnic. Grateful for this leisurely Sunday with the girls ,” she captioned a series of photographs on July 20.
Bruce Willis' Spouse Describes Dementia Diagnosis as a 'Blessing' and a 'Curse'
Heming Willis also documented a hike with the girls on June 30 and another outdoor escapade on July 6. While striving to be the best mother and caregiver she can be, Heming Willis is dedicated to increasing awareness for FTD diagnoses and supporting research initiatives.
"Over time, I realized that discussing it and raising awareness would be beneficial so that people seek medical attention sooner, receive an earlier diagnosis, and can participate in clinical trials," she informed People. "FTD is constantly misdiagnosed as bipolar disorder, a midlife crisis, or depression. It simply isn't on anyone's radar, which is why I believe going public with Bruce's diagnosis was so crucial."
Heming Willis' forthcoming book, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, is scheduled for release on Tuesday, September 9.
