Emma Heming Willis Shares Heartwarming Holiday Outlook Amidst Bruce's Dementia Battle

Emma Heming Willis is offering a glimpse into how special occasions like Thanksgiving and Christmas are observed now, as her spouse, Bruce Willis, navigates his ongoing battle with dementia.

In an interview with People featured on Thursday, November 27, Heming Willis, 47, presented an optimistic perspective on her family's holiday traditions since the Die Hard actor received his diagnosis.

“Bruce adored Christmas, and we enjoy commemorating it alongside him. The experience has simply evolved, compelling us to adjust accordingly,” she shared with the publication at the End Well 2025 conference held in Los Angeles the previous week.

The model further stated, “It's essential to learn, adjust, and forge new recollections, while still incorporating the familiar customs you cherished previously.”

She elaborated, “Life progresses. It simply continues. While dementia presents challenges, happiness remains present within it. I believe it's crucial not to portray dementia in an exclusively grim light. We continue to find laughter. Joy persists. It merely manifests in altered ways.”

Emma Heming Willis' Open Remarks Regarding Spouse Bruce Willis' Condition

Bruce’s relatives disclosed his initial diagnosis with aphasia, a linguistic impairment, in March 2022. By the subsequent year, they confirmed his ailment had advanced to frontotemporal dementia, a degenerative neurological disorder affecting speech, conduct, and movement.

The previous week, Bruce’s daughter Rumer, 37, provided a health status update for her father through her Instagram. (Bruce has Rumer with former wife Demi Moore, alongside daughters Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 31. Bruce and Emma are also parents to daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11.)

During an Instagram Q&A, a follower inquired about her father’s well-being, which elicited her reply.

“Individuals frequently pose this query to me, and I find it somewhat challenging to address, as frankly, anyone with FTD is not experiencing optimal health,” Rumer responded. “However, he is managing adequately for someone afflicted with frontotemporal dementia, if you understand my meaning.”

“My response would be that I am profoundly delighted and thankful that I can still visit and embrace him,” she continued. “I am so appreciative that when I go to him and offer an embrace, regardless of whether he identifies me, he can sense the affection I've extended, and I can perceive it returned from him. That I continue to witness a flicker of his essence, and he can feel the love I am bestowing.”

Heming Willis previously disclosed that Bruce was relocated to an alternative residence staffed by a continuous care team as his medical state progressed.

“This represented one of the most arduous choices I’ve encountered to date,” Heming Willis admitted during an August ABC special named Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey – A Diane Sawyer Special.

She further explained, “However, I understood, above all else, that Bruce would desire this arrangement for our girls. He would want them, you see, to reside in an environment better suited to their requirements, rather than his own.”

The Way Bruce Willis’ Dementia Revelation United His Kin

Within her memoir, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, published in September, Heming Willis recounted the benefits derived from the secondary residence.

“A key advantage of securing assistance, whether by integrating it into your household or relocating your loved one to a communal environment, is the opportunity to resume your initial function in their existence,” Heming Willis penned.

Heming Willis confessed it “required a period of adjustment for me to perceive it thus and reinterpret it, instead of dwelling in culpability,” noting that she can now “genuinely savor our precious moments together, and no act could ever suffice to compensate our care team for this.”

She concluded by stating she is “eternally thankful to once more experience Bruce as his spouse and for our children to have their mother returned to them.”
