Emma Stone on Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man Secrecy I Had No Idea
Emma Stone reflects on the elaborate secrecy her former partner, Andrew Garfield, maintained regarding a major project.
“When I inquired if he would appear in [Spider-Man: No Way Home], he feigned ignorance, saying, ‘I have no idea what you’re referring to,'” the 36-year-old Stone recounted on the Monday, October 20, installment of Josh Horowitz‘s “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast. “My reaction was, ‘Wait? So, I suppose that means no, correct?’ Yet, the answer was not no; it was unequivocally yes.”
The 42-year-old Garfield returned to his portrayal of Peter Parker, a character from The Amazing Spider-Man films, where he previously costarred with Stone. (Beyond their professional collaboration, Stone and Garfield shared a four-year romantic relationship, kindled after their initial encounter on the set of the 2012 superhero blockbuster.)
Garfield was not the sole celebrated past Spider-Man to join Tom Holland on screen, as Tobey Maguire also featured in the movie. Their collective appearance in the Marvel tentpole quickly became one of the year's most extensively discussed highlights.

“I commend him for it,” Stone further stated. “He maintained a tight lid on the information.”
Stone did not have a guest appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, given that her character, Gwen Stacy, met a tragic end in the follow-up to The Amazing Spider-Man. Although her role was not visually present, she held significant importance in the narrative arc pertaining to Garfield’s character.
Stone admitted on Monday that she has yet to view the film herself, having only received glowing feedback.
“I anticipate it would be quite moving,” the actress commented on her potential reaction to watching the film. “Word is it was superb. I fully intend to watch it at some point.”
Garfield had previously disclosed his efforts to conceal his involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home from numerous close individuals, including Stone.
“Emma persistently messaged me,” the actor relayed to Horowitz during a 2022 interview on the “Happy, Sad, Confused” podcast. “She probed, ‘Are you appearing in this latest Spider-Man movie?’ To which I responded, ‘I have no idea what you’re referring to.’ I maintained the charade, even with her.”
Garfield elaborated, “She then demanded, ‘Stop it. Just inform me.’ I replied, ‘I genuinely have no knowledge … ’ And afterward, when she watched it, her reaction was, ‘You’re an inconsiderate person.’”
Garfield had previously mused about forming a bond with Stone while filming The Amazing Spider-Man.

“We developed a strong personal rapport during [breaks between takes],” Garfield stated in a 2012 discussion with MTV News. “Those were the enjoyable moments: we would simply joke around, and I sensed, ‘Ah, this feels distinct.’ I wasn’t entirely conscious of what was unfolding during the screen test. She provides an invigorating challenge, which is stimulating. That marked the genesis.”
Following a four-year romance, Garfield and Stone ended their relationship in 2015. Stone subsequently married Dave McCary, and Garfield has reportedly been involved with Monica Barbaro. Notwithstanding their separation, Stone and Garfield have sustained an amiable relationship through the years.
“Our mutual affection is profound, an inherent, almost unconditional connection. There’s an abundance of love and profound deference between us. … As an artist, I am her most ardent admirer,” Garfield expressed about his former partner to Vanity Fair in January 2017. “It has been a joy to witness her achievements and observe her evolution into the actress she has become. And experiencing such reciprocal encouragement has been truly delightful. It is solely a magnificent circumstance.”
