Entertainment Loses Beloved Stars in Tragic Early Departures
The entertainment world bid farewell to numerous celebrated figures, from directors to performers, throughout 2025.
On January 4, reports emerged confirming the passing of Jeff Baena, the estranged spouse of actress Aubrey Plaza, at 47 years old, occurring on January 3. Based on official medical examiner documents obtained by Us Weekly, Baena's death was ruled a suicide.
“This profound loss is an unimaginable tragedy,” a spokesperson for Plaza conveyed in a January 6 statement to Us, speaking for the actress and her relatives. “We extend our deepest gratitude to all who have offered their condolences and support. We kindly request privacy as we navigate this difficult period.” (On March 19, it was disclosed that Plaza and Baena had been living apart for four months prior to his demise.)
Mere days following Baena’s passing, manager Simon Jones announced the death of RuPaul’s Drag Race luminary James Lee Williams — famously recognized as The Vivienne — at 32 years of age.
“James was an extraordinarily cherished, kind-hearted, and remarkable individual,” the publicist stated in an Instagram post dated January 5. “Their family is devastated by the loss of their beloved son, brother, and uncle. They take immense pride in the extraordinary accomplishments James achieved throughout their life and professional journey. No additional information will be released at this time. We respectfully request that James’s family be granted the necessary time and space to mourn and heal.”
On January 6, law enforcement officials confirmed that the popular drag queen’s demise was not under "suspicious circumstances." Williams’ family later revealed to BBC News on March 17 that the reality personality's death resulted from cardiac arrest induced by ketamine use.
