Epstein Scandal Forces Prince Andrew’s Royal Exit

Epstein Scandal Forces Prince Andrew’s Royal Exit

The collapse of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's career as an active member of the royal family is undeniably linked to his association with Jeffrey Epstein, the deceased financier and convicted sex offender.

Although Mountbatten-Windsor consistently denied all allegations, Virginia Giuffre (formerly Roberts), an Epstein victim, accused him of sexually assaulting her on three occasions when she was 17. Their introduction reportedly occurred via Epstein and his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell was later convicted of sex trafficking a minor after Epstein's 2019 death by suicide. (Maxwell continues to assert her innocence.)

While Mountbatten-Windsor first withdrew from royal responsibilities when the Epstein scandal gained prominence in 2019, he didn't formally relinquish his royal title until October 2025, when the accusations re-emerged.

In a statement to Us Weekly, he declared, "[I will] cease using my title and the honors bestowed upon me." He reiterated, "As I have stated previously, I strongly refute the allegations leveled against me."

The defining moments leading to Prince Andrew's loss of his royal title.

Below is a detailed timeline illustrating Mountbatten-Windsor's history with Epstein.

Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein’s Introduction

In a notorious 2019 interview with Newsnight's Emily Maitlis, Mountbatten-Windsor stated he met Epstein in 1999. This contradicts notes from the prince's private secretary in 2011, which indicated the two met in "the early 1990s."

The introduction for both men was allegedly orchestrated by Maxwell, Mountbatten-Windsor's close friend and Epstein's associate.

Jeffrey Epstein Visited Prince Andrew at Windsor Castle

Mountbatten-Windsor verified to Newsnight that Epstein visited him at Windsor Castle and Sandringham in 2000. However, he clarified that the financier did not receive a formal invitation from the wider royal family.

Mountbatten-Windsor explained, "[It was] definitely at my invitation, not at the Royal Family’s invitation, but recall that his girlfriend [Maxwell] was the central component here." He added, "He was, in effect, a 'plus one,' to some degree."

During the same year, both Mountbatten-Windsor and Epstein were seen at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago property in Palm Beach, Florida.

Epstein’s Conviction

Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to charges of child prostitution and soliciting a prostitute. A plea agreement resulted in him serving just 13 months in prison.

Mountbatten-Windsor informed Newsnight that he had "stopped communication" with Epstein during the investigation and trial period, but resumed contact in 2010.

He rationalized, "It was one of those situations where somebody is experiencing that, 'Well, I'm terribly sorry, I can't be [seen with] you.'"

Prince Andrew’s New York Visit

Mountbatten-Windsor made the highly scrutinized decision to visit Epstein at his New York City residence in 2010, after the convicted sex offender had been released from Palm Beach County Jail. When questioned on Newsnight about why he stayed at Epstein's home given the conviction, the royal stated, "I've asked myself why I went and what I was doing and if it was the correct action."

He added, "I traveled there with the singular goal of informing him that, due to his conviction, it was unsuitable for us to be seen together."

Days later, the two were photographed by paparazzi walking in Central Park.

Mountbatten-Windsor described the encounter: "We had a chance to walk in the park, and that conversation, coincidentally captured by photographs, was when I told him, 'Look, because of what happened, I don't believe it's right for us to stay in touch.' By mutual agreement during that walk, we decided to sever ties, and I departed." He concluded, "I believe it was the next day, and I've had no contact with him since that day."

Andrew Resigns From Key Role

The fallout from the Central Park photograph of Mountbatten-Windsor and Epstein was immediate, leading Buckingham Palace to declare in 2011 that he would step down as a U.K. trade envoy.

Sexual Assault Allegation Against Andrew

During a victim's rights lawsuit filed against Epstein and Maxwell, Giuffre asserted she was sexually abused by Mountbatten-Windsor in 2001, at age 17. After a night out at Tramp nightclub in London with Epstein, Maxwell, and Mountbatten-Windsor, Giuffre claimed Maxwell paid her $15,000 and instructed her to "do for [Mountbatten-Windsor] what you do for Epstein" at Maxwell's apartment.

Mountbatten-Windsor stated on Newsnight in 2019, "I have no memory of meeting her. I am almost certain, in fact, convinced, that I was never with her at Tramp." He continued, "Several aspects of that account are inaccurate, including the fact that I don't know where the bar is in Tramp. I don't drink. I doubt I ever purchased a drink in Tramp on any visit there."

In another tense moment during the Newsnight interview, Maitlis referenced Giuffre's recollection of Mountbatten-Windsor "profusely sweating" while they danced at Tramp.

He responded, "There's a minor issue with the sweating claim because I have a distinct medical condition where I do not perspire, or did not at that time... I did not sweat at that time because I experienced what I would call an adrenaline overdose during the Falklands War when I was under fire, making it almost impossible for me to sweat."

While a photograph exists featuring Mountbatten-Windsor and Giuffre, he denied that "the photograph was taken" by Epstein to leverage him into helping rehabilitate the financier's reputation.

He maintained, "If that photograph was taken with that objective, then it doesn't... align with what actually transpired."

Giuffre prevailed in a 2017 defamation suit against Maxwell and reached a separate settlement with Epstein in 2009.

Epstein’s 2nd Arrest

The financier was detained on federal charges of sex trafficking minors on July 6, 2019. Federal authorities arrested Epstein at Teterboro airport in New Jersey following his return flight from Paris.

Episode Found Dead

Epstein's body was discovered in his jail cell at New York City’s Metropolitan Correctional Center on August 10, 2019, with authorities suspecting suicide.

Newsnight Interview

Mountbatten-Windsor participated in a 58-minute television interview with BBC Newsnight's Emily Maitlis. When asked if he regretted his association with Epstein, he paused before responding.

"Still no, and the explanation is that the individuals I encountered and the chances I received to learn from or through him were actually quite beneficial," Mountbatten-Windsor replied. "He himself wasn't, as it were, as close as one might assume; we weren't intimately connected. So yes, I would visit his home, but that was primarily due to his girlfriend, not because of him."

Addressing Giuffre's claims, Mountbatten-Windsor insisted he had "no memory of ever meeting" her and denied committing any offense.

Stepping Back

Following his widely criticized Newsnight appearance, Mountbatten-Windsor declared in November 2019 that he would withdraw from royal responsibilities.

"It has become evident to me recently that the circumstances surrounding my past relationship with Jeffrey Epstein have significantly interfered with my family's activities and the important work being done by the numerous organizations and charities I am honored to support," he stated. "Consequently, I have requested permission from Her Majesty to withdraw from public duties indefinitely, and she has approved."

Lawsuit and Private Settlement

Giuffre filed a lawsuit in 2021, accusing Mountbatten-Windsor of sexual assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress. In February 2022, the royal's legal team verified that he had settled the case for an undisclosed amount, while still asserting his innocence.

A letter from his lawyers noted, "Prince Andrew plans to make a significant donation to Ms. Giuffre's charity, which supports victims' rights." It continued, "Prince Andrew never intended to discredit Ms. Giuffre's character, and he recognizes that she has endured suffering both as a verified victim of abuse and due to unjust public criticism."

Giuffre passed away in April 2025 at age 41, by suicide.

New Book on Prince Andrew Exposes Alleged Emails

Andrew Lownie's 2025 exposé, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, generated a fresh wave of claims regarding the prince's ties to Epstein. Several U.K. publications released alleged email exchanges among Mountbatten-Windsor, his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, and Epstein.

One purported email from 2011 showed Mountbatten-Windsor telling Epstein that they were "united in this and must overcome it." Another alleged email, sent after Ferguson publicly distanced herself from Epstein in 2011, reportedly had her referring to the convicted sex offender as "a loyal, generous, and superior friend to me and my family."

Responding to these messages, Ferguson's representative told BBC News: "The duchess expressed regret regarding her past association with Epstein many years ago, and as always, her foremost concern lies with his victims. Like many, she was deceived by his falsehoods. The moment she learned the full scope of the allegations against him, she severed contact immediately and publicly denounced him, prompting him to threaten a defamation lawsuit against her for linking him to paedophilia."

Prince Andrew Officially Resigns From Royal Duties, Gives Up His Title

As pressure intensified surrounding the Epstein scandal, Mountbatten-Windsor announced in October 2025 that he would surrender his royal title.

Virginia Giuffre: A Timeline of Key Events Before Her Death at 41

In an October 17, 2025, statement to Us, Mountbatten-Windsor declared, "Following discussions with The King and my immediate and extended family, we have concluded that the persistent allegations concerning me detract from the duties of His Majesty and the Royal Family."

He added, "I have chosen, as always, to prioritize my obligation to my family and nation. I stand by the decision I made five years ago to step back from public life." He finished by saying, "With His Majesty's approval, we believe I must now take an additional measure. Consequently, I will no longer utilize my title or the honors granted to me. As I have stated before, I adamantly reject the accusations against me."

Buckingham Palace Begins Process to Strip Prince Andrew of His Royal Titles

On October 30, 2025, a palace representative announced that King Charles III had started the formal procedure to revoke his brother's royal titles. The palace confirmed that his sibling would subsequently be referred to as "Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor."

Mountbatten-Windsor will also be required to vacate Royal Lodge, his residence obtained through a nominal lease agreement in 2003.

Buckingham Palace stated to Us that "[Mountbatten-Windsor’s] lease at Royal Lodge has thus far granted him legal security to maintain residence." The statement added, "A formal notice has now been issued to terminate the lease, requiring him to relocate to different private housing. These disciplinary actions are considered essential, despite his continued denial of the accusations against him."

Prince Andrew Seen in Newly Released Photos from Jeffrey Epstein’s Estate

On December 12, 2025, Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee released 19 images from a collection of over 95,000 recovered from Epstein’s estate. President Trump, former President Bill Clinton, director Woody Allen, and former Microsoft chairman Bill Gates appeared in the pictures; however, all have denied any awareness of Epstein’s illicit activities.

The images were acquired through the House Oversight Committee’s arrangement with the Epstein estate to review photographs and videos "captured at any property owned, rented, operated, or utilized by Epstein between January 1, 1990, and August 10, 2019."

Mountbatten-Windsor appears alongside Gates in one of the recently published photos. Gates informed the Wall Street Journal in January 2025 that associating with Epstein was "foolish."

Gates commented, "He managed to secure time with certain individuals by spending time with others." He added, "So, yes, I believe I was quite foolish. I thought it would assist my global health philanthropy. In reality, it didn't achieve that. It was simply a significant error."

Prince Andrew Won’t Face Police Action Over Bodyguard Allegation

On December 13, 2025, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson informed BBC News that police would pursue "no further action" against Mountbatten-Windsor regarding claims that he requested details about Giuffre from his taxpayer-funded protection officer.

The Mail on Sunday reported in October that Mountbatten-Windsor provided Giuffre's date of birth and social security number to an officer. Mountbatten-Windsor has not addressed these specific allegations.

The Met stated, "The Met remains dedicated to carefully evaluating any new information that might aid this investigation." They added, "As of now, we have not received additional evidence warranting the reopening of the inquiry. Without further information, we will proceed no further."

The police statement further noted, "As with any other case, should new pertinent information be brought to our attention, including data arising from releases in the U.S., we will examine it."

Giuffre's family expressed "deep disappointment" in a statement, noting that U.K. police had ceased the investigation "without explanation and without contacting us."
