First Wives Club reunion rumors resurface as stars reflect on sequel's uncertain future
The film The First Wives Club united a trio of unparalleled comedic talents in a memorable narrative exploring themes of camaraderie, romance, and self-discovery.
Released in 1996, the movie featured Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton portraying three companions grieving the suicide of their friend Cynthia (Stockard Channing), whose death followed her former spouse's marriage to a significantly younger woman.
Furthermore, Maggie Smith, Sarah Jessica Parker, Victor Garber, Elizabeth Berkley, Stephen Collins, and Marcia Gay Harden also took on secondary parts. Over two decades after its debut, Hawn hinted at ongoing discussions for a follow-up film.
"The screenplay requires approval, and they've recently provided us with a new version, which I need to review," she disclosed to Entertainment Tonight in November 2020. "Therefore, we are slowly progressing towards it, one could say."

Regrettably, Midler shared a less optimistic update in September 2022, informing People, "I also advocated for a First Wives Club continuation, but behind-the-scenes factors prevented its revival. And that truly saddened me.”
Midler further stated, "I genuinely perceived it as a significant slight, since female-led successes are often dismissed as mere coincidences. Yet when male-led projects achieve success, it's celebrated as exceptional, or so we were informed during First Wives."
