From cult comedian to convicted offender a look at Andy Dicks troubled legacy
Andy Dick is infamous in the comedy sphere due to his public scandals and ongoing legal troubles.
Dick established his reputation as part of the cast of the 1990s cult favorite, The Ben Stiller Show, performing alongside future major comedy figures such as Janeane Garofalo, Bob Odenkirk, and Ben Stiller. He subsequently led his own sketch program on MTV and featured in popular films like Reality Bites, The Cable Guy, and Zoolander.
Despite his professional achievements, the former Dancing With the Stars contestant's career trajectory has frequently been overshadowed by his addiction issues and various encounters with the law. According to a November 2022 report from The Los Angeles Times, Dick was required to register as a sex offender following his conviction for touching a delivery driver without consent.
In a 2025 interview for The Artists Project LA, he confessed, “The primary challenge I’ve faced throughout my life, both professionally as an actor and personally, is my substance abuse with drugs and alcohol.”

Andy Dick's Battle with Substance Abuse
The actor from Reality Bites has faced several arrests related to drug charges. He previously estimated having attended rehabilitation facilities more than 20 times.
Dick informed The Artists Project in 2025 that he was finally “in recovery [with] many months successfully completed.”
“I hope for many, many more years ahead,” he continued. “My journey has been long and difficult, full of twists, turns, and instability. … The key advice I share with others is to persevere; if you relapse, recover and continue moving forward.”
In December 2025, Dick allegedly overdosed while in Los Angeles and required Narcan, a medication used to counteract opioid effects. A representative for the L.A. Fire Department confirmed to TMZ that they received a report regarding “an overdose involving a 59-year-old individual.”
Dick subsequently stated to the outlet that he felt “completely fine,” and remarked: “I occasionally use crack, which I don't mind.”
Upon being questioned about returning to rehabilitation, Dick answered: “Absolutely not! No, I will not go.”
Andy Dick's Participation in 'Dancing With the Stars'
Dick appeared on season 16 of Dancing With the Stars in 2013. He and his partner, Sharna Burgess, finished seventh in the competition.
Upon the announcement of his participation, Dick publicly committed to remaining sober during the entire season.
He told Entertainment Tonight in 2013, “I was required to meet with [production]. I believe their main concern was that I show up sober.” He added, “Everyone appears worried about me. Actually, I have appointments scheduled today with both my therapist and, surprisingly, a case manager.”
Andy Dick's Family Life
Andy Dick and his first spouse, Ivone Kowalczyk, had a son, Lucas Astrom, when Dick was 21. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1990.
Dick also had a relationship with Lena Sved, and they are parents to two children: Meg and Jacob.
After completing a period of treatment, Dick revealed to Vice in 2016 that his son Jacob's personal struggle with addiction motivated him to get sober.
Dick told the publication: “[Jacob] was struggling with amphetamines, attempting to start fires. I was heavily drinking and thinking, ‘That child needs help!’ After three months of his sobriety, I realized I was being selfish. I couldn’t accept how poorly I was behaving. I clearly had the more significant issue.”
The actor disclosed, “I promised him I would remain in treatment for the same duration as him. He successfully finished treatment and now serves as a technician at the facility.”
Meg is a freelance video editor who revealed in November 2025 that she and her partner, Branden Donovan, are expecting a child. Her half-brother, Jacob, has identified himself as a “proud parent to two amazing daughters.”
Andy announced on Instagram in 2017 that his son Lucas founded a gaming startup named TripDik. Lucas married his wife, Sofia, in 2018.
Andy Dick's History of Arrests
Throughout his career, the comedian has gained notoriety for his frequent legal troubles.
Dick first encountered significant legal issues in 1999 when he was taken into custody for suspected cocaine, cannabis, and drug paraphernalia possession, as well as driving under the influence, following an incident where he supposedly crashed his vehicle into a Hollywood utility pole. These charges were dropped after he completed a drug diversion program.
In July 2008, Dick entered a guilty plea to misdemeanor battery and marijuana possession charges, following accusations that he exposed a teenage girl. He received a sentence of three years probation and was required to wear an alcohol-monitoring bracelet for one year.
Additional legal issues arose in January 2010 when Dick faced accusations of inappropriate touching of a bartender and a customer at a business in Huntington, West Virginia. A grand jury indicted Dick on two charges of first-degree sexual abuse, but the charges were ultimately dismissed when Dick successfully finished a pretrial diversion program.
Dick’s significant legal problems persisted throughout the 2010s. He denied one count of misdemeanor sexual battery in October 2019, stemming from allegations that he groped an Uber driver in West Hollywood. Following a two-week trial, The Los Angeles Times reported that Dick was found guilty in November 2022 and mandated to register as a sex offender. (Dick also received a sentence of 90 days in jail and 12 months of probation for this offense.)
Andy Dick's Public Declaration of Bisexuality in 2009
Dick was reported to be romantically involved with Brande Roderick, his castmate on Surreal Life, during the filming of the VH1 series in 2003.
While a guest on The Tyra Banks Show in 2009, he discussed his sexuality, stating that he identifies as bisexual.
He told host Tyra Banks, “I am willing to experiment with anything.” He added, “I genuinely have explored everything, excluding involvement with animals. There is only space for one animal, which is myself.”
He continued, “When I state, ‘I’m bisexual, my affection transcends gender,’ the heterosexual community claims, ‘That’s just an excuse – you’re gay!’ And the gay community responds, ‘Right, that’s just a facade – you’re gay!’ Both sides try to categorize me as gay.”
Andy Dick's Noteworthy Public Incidents
Dick’s performances at two separate Comedy Central Roasts are well-known for being controversial. In 2005, he acted as roast honoree Pamela Anderson's plastic surgeon and touched her breasts on stage.
“This is merely a medical adjustment,” Dick asserted while Anderson held her own breasts.
After Dick told the crowd that Anderson was unable to “feel any of this,” she quickly retorted: “Yes, I can feel it!”
During the following year's Comedy Central Roast for William Shatner, Dick created a disturbance by licking the faces of fellow panelists Farrah Fawcett and Carrie Fisher while performing.
In 2006, just a fortnight after ex-Seinfeld actor Michael Richards faced controversy for a racist outburst at The Laugh Factory in L.A., Dick was removed from the stage at the Improv next door. This incident followed an improvised routine with comedian Ian Bagg during which Dick used a racial slur.
Dick expressed regret to The Los Angeles Times for making “a joke concerning a topic that is not humorous.”
He admitted, “By attempting to trivialize a serious issue, I have caused offense to many people, and I apologize for my lack of sensitivity.” He added, “I want to apologize to Ian, the venue and its customers, and anyone else who felt harmed or offended by my statement.”
In February 2007, Jimmy Kimmel had Dick removed from the set of his late-night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, because Dick repeatedly touched fellow guest Ivanka Trump. Kimmel first held Dick back himself before asking security to remove the comedian.
Kimmel informed Extra, “Andy had a segment where he seemed slightly disoriented. When Ivanka appeared, he attempted to give her a large, wet kiss.” He added, “It was time for Andy to leave, so I dragged him out by his feet … He invariably makes me uneasy; you never know what he'll do next.”
More recently, in October 2017, Dick was dismissed from the independent film Raising Buchanan following allegations reported by The Hollywood Reporter that he groped and attempted to kiss several crew members.
“I did not touch anyone inappropriately,” Dick told the publication. “I might have kissed someone on the cheek to say farewell, and possibly licked them. That is typical behavior for me — I licked Carrie Fisher during a roast. It's my way of being humorous. I am not attempting to sexually harass people.”
In the same month, producer Kathryn Moseley claimed Dick was dismissed from a second film, the horror comedy Vampire Dad, due to “numerous, obvious acts of misconduct and unsuitable interaction with various crew members.”
Dick addressed the new allegations by stating to The Hollywood Reporter that he “overdosed on his medication.”
He stated, “I consumed too much Xanax and felt slightly disoriented … I will stop doing that.” He added, “I will no longer lick anyone's face. We have reached an understanding.”
Andy Dick’s Physical Confrontation with 'Newsradio' Costar
Dick's dispute with his former Newsradio costar Jon Lovitz began when Lovitz joined the cast of the NBC sitcom after Phil Hartman's death. (Brynn Hartman murdered her husband and subsequently took her own life at their Los Angeles residence in March 1998.)
Brynn also had difficulties maintaining sobriety, similar to Dick, and he later confessed on 20/20 that he provided her with cocaine during a 1997 Christmas celebration.
Dick told the ABC News series, “She was already experiencing a relapse, though I wasn't aware she had a problem with it to begin with.”
Lovitz reportedly clashed with Dick on the set of Newsradio. In an interview with Page Six, Lovitz remembered telling Dick that their collaboration wouldn't have been necessary “if [Dick] hadn't supplied Brynn with that cocaine.” (Lovitz later stated he apologized for the remark.)
Lovitz informed the same publication in 2007 that Dick approached him at a West Hollywood eatery and declared: “I've placed the 'Phil Hartman curse' on you – you will be the next to die.”
The two ultimately engaged in a physical altercation at the Laugh Factory in July 2007 after Lovitz demanded an apology from Dick.
Major 'Dancing With the Stars' Conflicts
Laugh Factory proprietor Jamie Masada told Page Six: “Jon lifted Andy by the head and slammed him against the bar four or five times, causing blood to flow from his nose.”
Lovitz defended his actions and labeled Dick as an “asshole.”
Lovitz asserted: “I grasped his shirt, pulled him close, and stated, ‘I refuse to be in your movie! I refuse to be part of your life.’” He continued, “I shoved him against the railing. Then I shoved him again with significant force. A security guard intervened. I am not proud of it . . . but he is a repulsive individual.”
Dick chose not to make a statement regarding the reported confrontation.
