From On-Screen Sweethearts to Real-Life Love: The Romantic Journeys of the High School Musical Cast

The on-screen connection between Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez in High School Musical blossomed into a real-life romance for the actors portraying them.

Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, who brought Troy and Gabriella to life in the 2006 DCOM, notably commenced dating soon after filming the initial movie. The couple concluded their relationship in 2010 after five years together.

“We were fortunate because our journey began side-by-side, which I believe resonated with audiences as they had already grown fond of our characters,” Hudgens shared with Glamour in June 2010, speaking about her then-partner. “Immediately, there was a spark between us. I believe everyone could sense it. During our audition, they placed us together. And he was charming. I mean, he wasn’t the polished man he is now. He even had a gap in his teeth back then.”

Ashley Tisdale, meanwhile, discovered her life partner in Christopher French, whom she married in 2018. Once the couple embraced married life, they chose not to revisit her performances as Sharpay Evans across HSM, High School Musical 2, and High School Musical 3: Senior Year.

“I personally don’t watch those old projects, and my husband hasn’t really seen them either. If [our daughter] happens to be watching with her friends someday, I might stumble upon it. However, I don’t envision actively introducing her to that material. I’m unsure,” Tisdale revealed exclusively to Us Weekly in March 2021, referencing their first child, Jupiter, who would arrive later that month. “Perhaps when the moment arrives, my perspective will shift. My desire is for her to be genuinely down-to-earth and, ideally, experience a relatively ordinary existence.”
