Goldie Hawn Recounts Distressing Circumcision Story of Son Oliver

Beloved actress Goldie Hawn has shared details regarding the circumcision of her son, Oliver Hudson.

“He was a month old,” the 79-year-old Hawn recounted during a recent installment of the “Sibling Revelry” podcast, hosted by Oliver, 49, and his sister Kate Hudson, which aired on Monday, November 3. “I was genuinely very distressed. I wished to be present as I felt I could offer him comfort.”

Hawn — mother to Oliver and Kate, 46, from her previous marriage to Bill Hudson, and son Wyatt with long-time partner Kurt Russell — elaborated, stating that she remained in the waiting area, still experiencing considerable distress over her inability to soothe her child.

“The physician emerged and announced, ‘You’ll be pleased to hear I required a larger clamp,’” she disclosed. “I responded, ‘Oh my goodness, what happens now?’”

Following Oliver's laughter and his mention that his mother had previously recounted this anecdote on a talk show, fellow guest Mel Robbins playfully inquired if he had ever expressed gratitude to his mother.

“Somewhat. … ‘It’s like a bigger clamp.’ I’m thinking, what?” he replied, before Robbins, 57, humorously interjected that it was “preferable to her stating we couldn’t locate anything diminutive.”

Hawn welcomed Oliver in 1976, and Kate followed in 1979, both with Bill, 76. After her six-year marriage to Bill concluded in divorce in 1982, Hawn began her relationship with Russell, 74, in 1983, and they had son Wyatt in 1986. (Russell also shares son Boston with his former spouse, Season Hubley.)

More than a year prior, Oliver discussed his early life after undertaking a course centered on “deconstructing the behaviors instilled by your parents and stepparents.” While Oliver anticipated the focus would be on his father and Russell, his bond with Hawn emerged as the most significant area of exploration.

“My mother was the person I felt the most significant 'trauma' about, surprisingly, because she was my primary caregiver and I spent all my time with her,” he conveyed on his “Sibling Revelry” podcast with guest Bode Miller in March 2024. “I sometimes felt vulnerable. She would be working. She had new partners whom I genuinely didn't appreciate. She was living her own life, and she was an extraordinary mother. This is my personal childhood perspective, as a child without a father who needed her presence, and sometimes she simply wasn't there, and she featured far more prominently than even my absent father.”

Despite navigating some challenging periods in their past, Oliver now shares a very close relationship with both Hawn and Russell.

“My parents are phenomenal grandparents,” Oliver — who is a father to sons Wilder, 18, and Bodhi, 15, and daughter Rio, 12, with his wife Laura Hudson — shared with Us Weekly in April 2021. “We are an extremely close-knit family. We all reside in very close proximity to one another. … They are wonderful individuals, incredible grandparents, and fantastic parents.”

Oliver is also eagerly anticipating celebrating Hawn’s 80th birthday later this month.

“We intend to keep it quite relaxed because that is her preference,” Oliver disclosed to People in October. “I mean, believe me, I proposed everything like, ‘Should we journey to India?’ And she simply desires a laid-back celebration, so we are keeping it very much a family affair.”
