Gronkowski Reveals He Hasn't Touched His NFL Earnings Despite Massive Fortune
Rob Gronkowski possesses a substantial financial cushion following his distinguished career in the National Football League – yet he has scarcely touched it.
“Even now, technically I haven’t utilized any of the money I earned playing in the NFL,” Gronkowski, 36, revealed during the Tuesday, December 30th episode of the “Bussin’ With the Boys” podcast.
The retired New England Patriots tight end attributed his lack of spending to his investments and the terms of his initial contract.
“[My agent] Drew Rosenhaus initially provided me with a $50,000 marketing budget at the start, which I had to repay from my earnings,” Gronkowski recalled. “So, I used that $50,000 to purchase a vehicle and cover my living expenses in New England.”

Gronkowski, who spent nine seasons with the Patriots and two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, noted that he “was consistently frugal and shared an apartment with a roommate during my early years”, which contributed to his ability to save.
Despite being a four-time Super Bowl champion and considered one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history, Gronkowski hadn’t anticipated the level of success he would achieve as a player. Consequently, he adopted a cautious approach to spending, a strategy that ultimately proved beneficial.
“I wasn’t certain how long my NFL career would last,” Gronkowski explained. “I was a second-round pick, so I signed a four-year, $4 million deal. I figured if I completed that contract, I’d be financially secure for life. I had $2 million in my bank account, and I could potentially earn $100,000 to $200,000 in interest.” He continued, “I thought, ‘If I perform well and remain a valuable player, I’ll be alright. If I don’t meet expectations, I’m still set for life because $2 million in the bank would be enough for me at that time.’”
He remembered thinking, “If I don’t perform at a high level, if I’m not the player I believe I can be, that’s fine. I’ll still be financially secure, because $2 million in the bank was enough to ensure my future at that point.”
Gronkowski officially retired from the NFL in 2022 and has continued to keep his NFL earnings largely untouched.
“I always intended to save it,” he said regarding his football earnings. “I utilized other income streams to cover my expenses.”
The actual amount of money Gronkowski possesses extends far beyond his NFL salary.
Forbes estimated in August 2025 that Gronkowski generates at least $10 million annually through his various business ventures. His estimated net worth, according to Celebrity Net Worth, is $45 million.

When Gronkowski was selected in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft, he signed a reported four-year contract valued at $4.4 million, including a $1.76 million signing bonus.
With his $50,000 marketing advance from his agent, Gronkowski spent approximately $1,500 per month on rent, primarily consumed his meals at the Patriots’ facility, and enjoyed the advantages of being an NFL player in Boston – such as complimentary drinks at bars, for example – as detailed by Forbes.
Prior to the conclusion of his initial rookie contract, Gronkowski secured a new six-year contract extension worth $53 million with the Patriots in June 2012, ESPN reported at the time. This agreement included $16.5 million in guaranteed money, representing the most lucrative contract for a tight end in NFL history.
In August 2018, Gronkowski finalized a revised contract, adding $4.3 million in performance-based incentives to his 2018 compensation, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport. This revised agreement meant the football star could potentially receive a total payout of $13.3 million in 2018.

Alongside his continued salary increases, Gronkowski focused on expanding his wealth through brand endorsements, partnerships, and investments.
In 2013, Gronkowski entered into a cash and stock agreement with Bodyarmor, despite initially having “no understanding” of what that entailed. When Coca-Cola acquired the sports drink company eight years later, Gronkowski received a “couple million dollars” as a result, Forbes reported in August 2025.
He subsequently invested in condominiums and parking garages and holds stock in Apple. Gronkowski also serves as a spokesperson for USAA, has partnered with FanDuel and Monster Energy, and works as a broadcaster for Fox.
“People often perceived me as just a simple athlete, and that’s been a recurring theme throughout my career,” Gronkowski told Forbes in August 2025. “Sometimes it takes me a bit longer to grasp concepts, but I’m always aware of what’s happening around me. So, I occasionally played into that persona – not consistently, but when it was advantageous.”
