Harry and Charles Embrace in Emotional Reunion Sparked by Handwritten Note
A source close to the royals is revealing insights into the “deeply moving” and much-anticipated meeting between Prince Harry and his father, King Charles, following a separation of almost two years.
“The catalyst for the encounter was a handwritten note from Harry, sent to Charles earlier this year, conveying his wish to mend their relationship,” an exclusive source informed Us Weekly after the Duke of Sussex's meeting with his father on Wednesday, September 10.
“Uncertainty surrounded whether the meeting would occur until merely a week prior,” the informant added, describing the reunion as “extremely positive and notably comfortable.”
Harry journeyed from overseas to participate in the yearly WellChild Awards in London on Monday, September 8. Before his meeting with his father at Clarence House around 5:20 p.m. that same day, the Duke of Sussex also made a stop at the Centre for Blast Injury Studies at Imperial College London, as reported by Sky News.

As per the media source, the King and his son conversed for approximately 54 minutes before Prince Harry left to attend an Invictus Games function around 6:14 p.m. local time.
“Their conversation included personal updates on the children and King Charles's recent health developments,” the informant shared with Us regarding their discussion. “The encounter was marked by embraces and emotional moments.”
Prince Harry has two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, with his spouse, Meghan Markle. The couple became distanced from Harry's family after their decision to step back from senior royal duties in 2020 and move to Montecito, California.
King Charles revealed his diagnosis with an undisclosed type of cancer in February 2024. Following this health concern, Prince Harry openly communicated his wish to repair the fractured bond between him and his father.
“My desire is to reconcile with my family,” Prince Harry stated to the BBC during a May 2025 interview, which took place soon after his legal challenge failed to restore government-funded protection for him and his family during U.K. visits. “Life is valuable,” Harry added then. “I am uncertain how much time my father has left.”
The informant described the atmosphere during Wednesday's royal gathering as “authentic and optimistic,” noting that “chuckles” were shared even though the two had not been together in person for almost two years.
“Upon their initial encounter, they embraced for an extended period,” the insider relayed to Us. “Harry became tearful, and it was a deeply emotional moment for both. They had genuinely longed for each other's presence.”
The source further explained: “The available time was brief, but Charles consented as it fit his schedule, offering a suitable chance to meet while Harry was in London. They convened at Clarence House, which is the King's private residence. It was selected for its cozy, less formal ambiance, in contrast to Buckingham Palace. They desired a private environment to gently re-establish their personal bond, free from any constraints.”
The same informant indicated that the meeting occurred because King Charles “believed the moment was opportune” and that their “estrangement required resolution.”
Prince Harry's Remarks Regarding His Highly Anticipated Reunion with King Charles III
“A form of resolution was necessary, and both felt equally strongly about it,” the insider concluded.
Although the strained relationship between Prince Harry and his father appears to be improving, the same cannot be affirmed for Harry's bond with his estranged brother, Prince William.
“I believe that Harry's connection with his brother presents a distinct challenge compared to his relationship with his father,” royal expert Kristen Meinzer exclusively shared with Us in August. “However, should Charles grow closer to Harry, William might feel inclined to emulate his father's approach.”
