Harry's brotherly banter offers a humorous take on family ties amid royal rifts
Even with his ongoing separation from the monarchy, Prince Harry appears to be humorously addressing the often-complex bond shared by brothers and sisters.
The Duke of Sussex, aged 40, was present at the 20th WellChild Awards held in London on Monday, September 8. During the ceremony, Harry encountered Declan Bitmead, a recipient of the Inspirational Young Person award for those aged 15 to 18, according to Hello.
As reported by the publication, Harry inquired about Declan's family life, prompting the teenager to reveal he had a younger brother. Harry humorously questioned Declan if his sibling “drove him crazy.” Declan responded that their relationship was amicable.
"Ah, siblings," Harry commented.
Prince Harry's Varied Experiences with the Royal Family Through the Years
Declan further informed the royal that he and his brother are enrolled at the same educational institution.
"That can occasionally add to the difficulty," Harry remarked.
Beyond discussing his family, Harry also discovered Declan suffered from impaired vision. Consequently, Harry opted to offer a self-description at that moment, assisting Declan in visualizing the Duke of Sussex more clearly.
"I'm without hair, I have red hair, and to top it off, I possess a red beard,” he quipped. “You're probably relieved."
Harry's observation regarding sibling dynamics occurs amidst his continuing disagreement with his brother, Prince William, and his father, King Charles III. Harry's strained relationship with them dates back to 2020 when he and his wife, Meghan Markle, relinquished their official royal roles and moved from the U.K. to the United States. They currently live in Montecito, California, with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Harry's most recent in-person meeting with his father took place in February 2024, coinciding with the month the monarch announced his cancer diagnosis publicly.
“My family means a great deal to me,” Harry stated on Good Morning America that month. “Being able to board a flight, visit him, and spend some moments together, I am truly appreciative of that. I swiftly traveled to see him as quickly as possible.”
Will Prince William and Harry Reconcile? Insiders Share Their Thoughts
In an earlier part of this year, Harry openly expressed his wish for reconciliation with his family, particularly in light of his father’s health situation.
“I genuinely desire to resolve things with my family. There’s no benefit in maintaining this conflict,” Harry informed the BBC in May. “Life is valuable. I am uncertain about the remaining time my father has. He refrains from speaking with me due to security matters, yet reconciliation would be a welcome outcome.”
A possibility exists for Harry to encounter Charles and William during his current visit to the U.K. Family appeared to be a prominent thought for Harry when he paid his respects at the resting place of his deceased grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. Us Weekly reports that Harry placed a wreath and flowers on the monarch's grave to honor her on the third anniversary of her passing. (Elizabeth passed away in September 2022 at 96 years old.)
