Harry's Security Win Could Complicate Meghan's Return to the UK

While Prince Harry recently achieved a victory in his legal battle concerning U.K. security, one royal commentator believes the result may not ultimately be beneficial for his wife, Meghan Markle.

“This places Meghan in a somewhat uncomfortable situation, as I don’t believe she is particularly keen to return to what she perceives as a rather unwelcoming atmosphere,” royal biographer Christopher Andersen, author of Brothers and Wives, exclusively told Us Weekly on Monday, January 5.

The Mail on Sunday reported the day before that Harry, 41, had officially won his protracted dispute for government-funded security. This decision followed a review of Harry’s safety assessment by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC) last month. It appears the committee determined the Duke of Sussex is eligible for armed protection.

Team Sussex has declined to offer any comment on the Mail on Sunday report.

Prince Harry States His ‘Deepest Concerns’ Were Validated in Security Case

The years-long legal challenge began after the Duke of Sussex and Meghan stepped down from their positions as senior working royals in 2020. Harry previously explained that the absence of security measures had prevented him from returning to his home country with Meghan, 44, and their two children, Archie, 6, and Lilibet, 4.

“I can’t envision a scenario in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK at this point,” Harry told the BBC in a May 2025 interview. “I cherish my country, I always have done, despite actions taken by some within that country.”

However, Harry’s significant win opens the possibility for them all to return.

“If Harry and Meghan were to return to London with Archie and Lilibet, it would likely be so the children can begin to cultivate a genuine connection with their grandfather, the king,” Andersen continued.

While Harry has been estranged from his family for several years, he and King Charles III initiated the process of reconciliation with a private meeting in September 2025.

“Charles is inherently sentimental when it comes to his grandchildren, so I’m confident they would be greeted warmly,” Andersen added. “But that doesn’t necessarily mean that Harry will ever be fully accepted by the royal family and permitted to resume some sort of semi-official role. That opportunity has passed – and that applies even more so to Meghan.”

Everything to Know About Prince Harry's Pursuit of Security in the U.K.

Harry previously asserted that he had been denied a “fundamental responsibility of care” by being refused protection during his visits back home, which have primarily been for professional engagements.

“It is accurate that I have been treated differently in this matter,” Harry wrote in a May 2025 statement after losing his appeal for security. “The terms of my security were not established based on threat, risk, and impact; they were determined by my role – one that my wife and I wished to maintain, but which was ultimately denied.”

His fight has “solely been about ensuring my safety and that of my immediate family,” Harry continued at the time, noting that it was a “straightforward” request to “securely visit my home country with the same level of security that other governments consider essential for our protection.”
