Hayley Erbert Hough Reflects on Two Years of Recovery and Finding New Life After Brain Surgery
Hayley Erbert Hough commemorates the second anniversary of her brain surgery, reflecting on the profound transformation possible within a limited timeframe.
"Precisely two years ago, I received a second opportunity at life thanks to emergency brain surgery," Erbert, aged 31, posted on Instagram on Saturday, December 6. The accompanying images were striking monochrome photographs featuring the expectant mother tenderly holding her developing pregnancy bump.
"During these twenty-four months, I have experienced the full spectrum of human emotions, ranging from those that shatter you to those that restore you," she continued in her message. "I have recovered facets of myself that I believed were lost forever, redefined my identity, and navigated periods of bereavement, success, happiness, persistent anxiety, sorrow, recovery, and serene optimism. It was certainly a tumultuous journey... Yet, I am genuinely thankful for every aspect of it, and profoundly proud of both myself and my physique for persevering through it all."
She concluded, "It is truly miraculous that two years prior I was struggling to survive... and today, I am in the process of generating new life."
Derek Hough Refers to His Wife Hayley Erbert as a 'Miracle' Following Her Medical Emergency
Erbert wed her dancing colleague Derek Hough; their acquaintance began while working on the set of Dancing With the Stars. Following the start of their relationship in 2015, they confirmed their engagement in 2022 and exchanged vows in August 2023.
This past July, the couple thrilled their supporters by revealing that they are expecting their initial child together.
Last month, Erbert Hough and her spouse provided Us Weekly with an exclusive account of the life-threatening medical crisis that preceded her diagnosis.
"It was ironic because I was discussing the preciousness of life and the importance of appreciating our limited time here and our relationships," Derek, 40, told Us, recalling the evening of December 6, 2023, when the Dancing With the Stars veteran performed alongside his wife as a tribute to the late judge, Len Goodman.
"While I was delivering those lines, unbeknownst to me, Hayley was experiencing seizures backstage and was, in effect, dying."
Without anyone's awareness, Hayley was enduring a potentially fatal cranial hematoma.
"My final recollection is performing on stage," she stated. "I definitely recall experiencing significant pain... [but] I remember dancing, and then suddenly, my vision faded completely."

Following her immediate transfer to a local medical facility, Hayley underwent an emergency cranieotomy procedure where forty percent of her cranium was taken away in an effort to preserve her life.
"I was informed... that she might not live, and should she survive, she probably would not be the individual she once was," Derek recounted to Us. "That instant was absolutely shattering. The expression 'your entire world comes crashing down' feels accurate because that's genuinely how it felt. It's as if the room collapses on top of you."
Hayley has since achieved a complete recovery, telling Us that her experience was "undeniably one of the hardest periods of my existence."
"I could have remained in a state of self-pity constantly, day after day," she proceeded. "But I realized that there is still so much inherent beauty remaining in this life. And I have chosen to live for that."
